The Department of Medical Education at the Dell Medical School is looking for a Health Sciences Librarian.

This position is a temporary position with a start date of 11 / 1 / 24 and an end date of 9 / 30 / 26. There is potential for this part-time role to become full-time after 9 / 30 / 26 based upon availability of funding, work performance, and progress toward goals.

Purpose

Collaborate with the senior librarian to manage a 21st century health sciences library in the service of the Dell Medical School's mission of "Revolutionizing how people get and stay healthy.

Plan and activate a variety of services, collections and instructional programs to educate and position students, faculty, and staff to transform health care.

Empower users with unfettered access to vetted information resources to equip them with life-long skills to succeed as medical professionals.

Responsibilities

Provide reference / information services to students, staff, and faculty by engaging in activities that inform users about library resources and services, scholarly communication, evidence-based medicine, reference management, publication, information literacy, generative AI, data management plans, mandates regarding open / public access of federally funded publications and research data, support for curriculum etc.

Activities could include : Email, chat, and phone communication, In-person or virtual consultations, development of instructional resources, tutorials, and library website / libguide content, instructional sessions, and service on medical education committees.

Guide, support, instruct on, and / or co-author literature reviews, grant applications, and research projects and publications in which faculty, staff, and students are involved.

Activities could include : provide guidance, consultation, or instruction regarding relevant databases, search terms, and search strategies, develop search strategies and / or run literature searches, participate in evidence synthesis projects (i.

e. for systematic reviews, scoping reviews, etc.), and teach instructional sessions about evidence synthesis methodology.

Co-manage Dell Medical School Library collections. Assist the senior librarian in creating and overseeing the annual library collections' budget.

Develop relationships and communicate with library resource vendors to keep up on new products, to co-negotiate deals, to track acquisitions and to gather usage data.

Assist the senior librarian with the tracking and managing of acquisitions, subscriptions, and renewals, and with assuring access to library resources.

Co-produce an annual collections report. Evaluate and respond to purchase requests from users.

Innovate, update, and build programs and services to serve the medical school clientele. Activities could include : review and improve current programs and services, build new innovative programs and services in support of teaching, learning, research, and clinical care, collaborate with main campus library colleagues to develop and provide programs, services and collections, work effectively and collegially in teams with faculty, staff and learners at all levels, assess library services and programs, collaborate closely with Academic Technology and Information Technology units on shared collaborations of library technology products, and communicate and interact with hospital affiliates, other information professionals, health professionals, and partner organizations as needed to carry out the mission of Dell Medical School.

Engage in professional development to maintain awareness of and develop skills in new information science initiatives, emerging technologies, medical librarianship, scholarly communication, etc.

Activities could include m embership and attendance at conferences through the Medical Library Association or other relevant society, attendance at virtual professional development sessions offered by the National Library of Medicine, regional medical library associations, academic and medical libraries, etc, and r eading of contemporary literature, blogs, and listservs devoted to relevant topics in academic and medical librarianship.

Engage with students who are employed with or working on projects at the Dell Medical School Library. These students could be : student employee, graduate or undergraduate students from the UT Department of Library and Information Science who are engaged in capstone projects or research projects in medical or academic librarianship.

Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library and information sciences graduate program, or equivalent degree. Experience in an academic / research library in one or more of the following areas : building programs in support of an established educational, research, and professional mission, providing reference and research consultation service in an academic- or research-level setting, or providing library instruction and creating library instruction materials.

Excellent communication and interpersonal relations skills. Demonstrated initiative and flexibility in adapting to change.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment. Strong service orientation. Highly curious individual who enthusiastically learns new concepts, develops new skills, and seeks to keep up with the continuously evolving field of information science.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated subject knowledge and familiarity with scientific literature, library resources, and research processes in medicine, health professions, or another STEM field.

Experience developing library policy, articulating vision, and providing leadership and direction toward achieving strategic goals.

Experience using and / or teaching reference management tools such as EndNote and / or Zotero. Demonstrated awareness of trends in scholarly communication and Open Science, particularly in areas such as : NIH Public Access Policy and compliance, OA publishing, author rights, publication metrics, research data management, and data curation / sharing.

Recommended Skills (i.e. skills that can be acquired on the job) : experience teaching evidence-based practice using emerging technologies and instructional methods, experience working on systematic reviews and other comprehensive searches, as well as familiarity with SR tools such as Rayyan or Covidence, knowledge of current issues in health sciences, including clinical translational research, interprofessional education, and quality improvement, and experience with or familiarity with proposal writing and implementation of grants.

Salary Range

$2,500+ monthly depending on qualifications (based on a 20hour work week)
