Public Health Nurse Supervisor (Community Health)

New Hanover County is actively searching for a Public Health Nurse Supervisor in the Community Health Division. The community health nurse supervisor will lead the community team in protecting and promoting the health of the public.

As part of our Public Health Department team, you will be responsible for assigning work, ensuring access to training and education.

We are specifically seeking individuals with a profound capacity for leadership and knowledge of how to effectively address emerging diseases and outbreaks.

This person will need to be flexible in adapting to work assignments and fluctuations in emerging diseases or outbreaks, capable of delivering impactful presentations, conducting thorough assessments of health status and needs, and evaluating the effectiveness of health programs.

Join us in this role, where you will provide direct patient care, supervise nursing services and public health programs, and contribute to community outreach activities that promote public awareness of health issues.

Essential Duties :

  • The Community Health Nurse Supervisor will lead the community team in protecting and promoting the health of the public.
  • Supervises the community health team including communicable disease and tuberculosis staff, and staff in the Adult Dental program and Mobile Dental Unit.
  • Performs supervisory duties to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained;

and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.

Oversees Community Health services which includes monitoring and providing patient care; ensuring compliance with applicable health program standards;

auditing records; and ensuring quality and efficiency of services.

  • Participates in communicable disease investigations.
  • Participates in home and congregate site visits.
  • Participates in planning and implementing disease prevention and wellness programs; collaborates with division manager on staff and program issues.
  • Acts as a health department liaison to other healthcare providers and agencies.
  • Performs community outreach and education.
  • Collaborates with Community Partners to facilitate outreach events and Public Health clinical experience for students and interns.
  • Provides skilled nursing procedures which may include the performance of specialized procedures and administering immunizations;

dispensing, delivering or administering appropriate medications and vaccines; performing screening tests; and audits patient records for follow-up.

  • Consults with the Public Health Management and collaborates with other supervisors to integrate, coordinate and prioritize public health nursing activities.
  • Assures that safe, efficient and effective health services are provided in accordance with agency policies and procedures and program standards to include program chart audits.
  • Provides nursing services in outbreak control and surveillance of general communicable disease in collaboration with the CD Team.

Serve on the EPI Team.

  • Develops prevention activities and provides community awareness educational programs on community preparedness.
  • Performs work during emergency / disaster situations.

Hours :

8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00 PM, Monday - Friday.

Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.

Salary Information :

The hiring range for this position is $71,920 - $97,091.50. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Bilingual candidates are eligible for a differential (5%) when performing Spanish language interpretation during the course of work.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience :

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing that includes a public health nursing rotation and two (2) years of public health nursing experience;

or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

  • Within one year of employment, the Introduction to Communicable Disease Surveillance and Investigation in North Carolina course must be completed, including successfully passing the course test.
  • Must have 6 months of experience as a Public Nurse.

Licenses / Certifications

Required Licenses / Certifications :

  • Valid North Carolina Driver License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license with eligibility to practice nursing in the state of North Carolina.
  • Nurses without a Bachelor of Science in Nursing must complete the North Carolina Credentialed Public Health Nurse course within one (1) year of employment.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) by the American Heart Association.
