Community Service Officer (C.S.O.)

The City of Carbondale, Illinois, is seeking a Community Service Officer (C.S.O.) for the Support Services Bureau. The C.S.O. is a non-sworn uniform position responsible for assisting both sworn and civilian departmental personnel in the performance of their duties. The C.S.O. is subject to assignments, shifts, and duties according to the needs of the Department. Another objective of this position is to provide training and experience to the C.S.O. who wish to pursue a career in law enforcement. The C.S.O. will complete training to learn the operations of the Department, demonstrate proficiency in multiple aspects of law enforcement and learn how to become a professional police officer. Once a candidate successfully completes the training curriculum, they potentially have the opportunity to apply for the entry-level police officer position. The physical fitness assessment must be successfully passed.

  • Provide training and resources to potential future officers.
  • Promote diversity in the Department.
  • Assist with Department recruiting.
  • Train successful C.S.O. candidates that will apply to become Carbondale police officers.

Essential Duties :

  • Participate in the enforcement of a variety of local ordinances including those regarding animal control, parking, bicycles and abandoned vehicles.
  • Handle non-criminal complaints as assigned; prepare appropriate reports and paperwork; handle walk-in complaints and associated reports about minor incidents.
  • Provide support and assistance to police officers at accident, fire and crime scenes.
  • Provide assistance to the general public; provide information and directions; handle or route inquiries or problems to the appropriate department personnel.
  • Transport department vehicles and equipment to service and repair locations; deliver and collect a variety of items as necessary.
  • Monitor detainees according to departmental policy.
  • Provide assistance to the Records Section / Evidence Section, as needed.
  • Use proper radio procedures and maintain radio discipline at all times.
  • Assist the department with community relations activities.
  • Assist individuals who come in contact with the police for non-crime related situations, yet who are in need of social service assistance. Conducts House watch / Extra Patrol security checks when required.

  • Other tasks as assigned by a supervisor or proper authority.
  • Collect / deliver a variety of items and documents to / from City Hall, Jackson County Courthouse, SIU Police Department, etc.
  • Perform traffic surveys and observation details as needed.
  • Conduct business checks as needed.
  • Participate in training modules to learn the operations, general orders, rules and regulations of the Police Department to prepare to potentially become a Carbondale police officer.
  • Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills : Knowledge of geography of the area; knowledge of departmental procedures, rules and regulations; knowledge of and ability to operate a computer; ability to deal firmly and courteously with the public; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to maintain required records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to safely operate department vehicles; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to develop skills in the use and care of special police equipment as may be assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications Required :

  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • Possess a valid Illinois Driver's License
  • Obtain the 60 credit hours as a CSO
  • Must pass police background check and drug screening test.

    Residency within the City's "9 mile boundary" is required within six months of employment.

    Salary : $17.50 / hr
