Medical Assisting Internship
Provide students enrolled in a Medical Assisting program with practical experience in a clinical setting, allowing them to observe and participate in various administrative and clinical tasks.
To perform this internship successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily :
- Assist with patient care
- Interviews patients, accurately takes vital signs such as manual BP, pulse rate, temperature, 02 level, weight and height, and properly records information into EMR
- Assist with examinations
- Prepare patients for procedures / exams
- Prepares exam rooms for examination of patients as well as stocking them
- Collect specimens
- Observe procedures
- Understand instruments and materials provider requests for certain procedures
- Set up medical equipment
- Manage inventory of supplies
- Document patient information and manage records using EMR system
- Ensure patient comfort
- Performs EKG's, urinalysis, strep test, flu test, covid test, mono test, pregnancy test, checks patients A1C, etc.
- Administer injections and immunizations per provider orders
- Manage sensitive patient information
- Change wound dressings
- Instrument sterilization
- May be requested to learn duties outside of normal responsibilities (i.e., learn patient check-in)
- Coordinator patient communications regarding refill medications, order additional labs or imaging as needed, complete prior authorizations, complete precertification for imaging, etc.
- Instruct patients and / or their family as directed by the provider.
- Communicate with patients effectively to discuss results as directed by the provider while maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Perform blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
