About the Role We are seeking a Data Architect to lead the design, assessment, and planning of a cloud migration effort involving multiple SQL Server 2017 databases and their associated application ecosystems.
The Data Architect will play a critical role in analyzing the current on-prem data landscape, defining the target Azure data architecture, and guiding best practices for performance, scalability, and security in the cloud.
The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience with SQL Server (2016 / 2017 / 2019), Azure SQL (PaaS and Managed Instance), data modeling, and enterprise data integration patterns.
Skills Required & Key Responsibilities 1.
Discovery and Assessment Lead the assessment of on-prem SQL Server 2017 databases, identifying schema complexity, dependencies, and technical debt.
Collaborate with Database Administrators (DBAs) and Application Engineers to document database–application relationships and data flows.
Evaluate database workloads for migration readiness and compatibility with Azure SQL platforms.
Review performance, indexing, partitioning, and resource utilization of existing databases. 2. Data Architecture and Design Design scalable, secure, and high-performance target data architectures on Azure (Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, or Elastic Poolas applicable) or a hybrid model.
Develop logical and physical data models to support modernization efforts.
Define standards for naming, partitioning, indexing, and data retention policies.
Recommend appropriate Azure data services, storage tiers, and networking configurations. 3.
Integration and Governance Map data integration points across applications, ETL processes, APIs, and reporting systems.
Partner with integration teams to ensure data consistency, lineage, and flow across environments.
Establish data governance standards for security, compliance, and access management in Azure. 4.
Collaboration and Planning Work closely with Infrastructure, Networking, and Security teams to define connectivity and access requirements.
Participate in and lead workshops with client SMEs to capture requirements and validate findings.
Support development of the migration backlog and roadmap with prioritized recommendations.
Contribute to the creation of technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and design blueprints.
Qualifications 8+ years of experience in database and data architecture, including at least 3 years in cloud data platforms (Azure preferred).
Strong expertise with SQL Server 2016 / 2017 / 2019 (schema design, T-SQL, performance tuning).
Proven experience designing and implementing Azure SQL, Azure Managed Instance, or Synapse solutions.
Solid understanding of data modeling, ETL / integration, and data governance principles.
Familiarity with networking, identity, and security concepts related to cloud-hosted data environments.
Hands-on experience with Data Migration Assistant (DMA), Data Migration Service, Azure Migrate, or equivalent migration tools.
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
