Job Summary

The college instructor teaches in discipline areas in which he or she has specific training and

competence. The instructor is expected to plan, organize, and teach in a manner that encourages

development in harmony with the schools mission and values. He or she also promotes and directs

successful student learning in keeping with the learning-centered values and goals of the school.

The HVAC Adjunct Instructor is responsible for delivering instruction in HVAC labs and classroom

settings, teaching theory-based curriculum aligned with industry standards, preparing students for

entry-level employment in the HVAC field, and entering grades into the colleges Learning

Management System (LMS). This instructor plays a key role in student success and program

promotion by participating in recruitment activities and representing the HVAC program at public

events. The Adjunct Instructor will be directly responsible to the Dean of Workforce, Technical, and

Community Education Programs. Some authorities of the Dean will be delegated to the Department

Chair, with whom the instructor will work cooperatively in the best interest of the college and its

students. This is a part-time adjunct instructional role and will be held Monday through Thursday

from 5 : 00 PM to 9 : 00 PM at the Advanced Technology Center in Ghent, West Virginia, and may

require weekend participation depending on program scheduling. Some travel may be required for

program-related recruitment events or campus activities.

Nature of Work

  • Duties include student advising, recruitment, and retention activities; professional development;

college and community service; participation in committee activities; curriculum design and

assessment; and other duties assigned by the academic dean.

Provides instruction in both hands-on and classroom components of the HVAC curriculum, which may

include electrical systems, refrigeration, system diagnostics, and safety procedures. Evaluates student

learning, maintains equipment, and helps students develop job-ready skills in heating, cooling,

ventilation, and refrigeration systems.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards.

Summary of Responsibilities :

Lab & Practical Instruction

Facilitate hands-on HVAC lab instruction aligned with program competencies and safety

protocols.

Provide students with experiential training in HVAC diagnostics, repair, and system

installation.

Theory Instruction

Deliver HVAC theory and classroom content in accordance with industry-aligned curriculum.

Ensure course instruction supports credentialing preparation where applicable (e.g., EPA

608).

Academic Duties :

Develop and distribute course syllabus outlining requirements, objectives, and outcomes.

Evaluate and record student performance; assign and submit final grades in the LMS.

Maintain accurate documentation of attendance, participation, and academic progress.

Prepares class sessions and assignments to help students grasp course content and how it

integrates with overall student learning outcomes for the course.

Make sure that student evaluations are administered near the end of each semester.

Is familiar with and maintains behavior and actions consistent with school policies.

Develops and administers pre and post-tests for each class taught, submitting results to the

supervisor as requested at the end of each semester.

Teaches courses according to the catalog descriptions and following defined course standards

and outcomes.

Documents students attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading

assignments, projects, quizzes, and / or examinations that lead to a final grade.

Submit course grades to the Registrar by the assigned date.

Student Support & Engagement :

Be accessible to students for questions or support related to coursework and program

success.

Participates in and contributes to curriculum development by planning, developing, and

evaluating new and existing courses and curricula.

Accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods for counseling and

mentoring students in matters related to academic success, goals, and development.

When called upon, functions as an official academic advisor, counseling students about

courses, academic sequences, and program selections.

Program Support :

Attend program recruitment events and support promotional activities in coordination with

the department.

Maintains and disseminates current information on services available to students throughout

the school.

Represents the school positively to prospective students and supporters.

Assist in updating instructional materials and simulator lab practices as needed.

Performs other responsibilities requested by the supervisor.

Education

The education, experience, aptitudes, skills, etc., for instructional positions, differ by type of academic

Academic Requirements :

Vocational / Workforce instructors must possess a minimum of a bachelors degree in their teaching field from an accredited institution or as required an associate degree and valid licensure in that field.

Instructors may be assigned to courses in which they possess a combination of educational and

practical experience.

Experience

In addition to the knowledge / education, the following related work experience is typically required, for

this position. An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be

acceptable.

HVAC Technician - Demonstrated work experience in the HVAC industry - Required

Teaching - Prior teaching, training, or mentorship experience - Preferred

LMS Systems - Proficiency in using or learning college LMS systems (e.g., Brightspace, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) - Preferred

License or Certification

(State) License or Certification

EPA 608 Certification - Required

Associate's degree or equivalent plus five (5) years of experience in the trucking industry, including over the road driving and driver training. - Required

OR

High School / GED or equivalent plus seven (7) years of experience, including over the road driving and driving training. - Required

HVAC Industry Credential (e.g., NATE, HVAC Excellence) - Required
