Fire Inspector I
$28.50 - $42.75 per hour

The Fire Inspector provides inspections relating to fire and life safety assurance, through physical inspection of construction sites, existing buildings, public and private property, project coordination, site development inspections and other inspections for compliance with fire and life safety codes and ordinances. These duties are performed for the Town Fire Department. Incumbents are required to perform a broader range of duties which include field review and necessary documentation to obtain compliance with fire and life safety codes and ordinances. Compliance is ordered when deficiencies are discovered. Difficult technical problems may be referred to a supervisor, but employees work independently in the field and are responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment, and familiarity with a variety of codes, ordinances, and construction methods or problems.
The Fire Inspector I will have graduated from high school / GED equivalent and minimum one year of experience as Fire Inspector role or role performing substantially similar duties, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and abilities for the position.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
- Administers wildfire fuels reduction grant program;
- Performs field review and inspections. Requires fire and life safety corrections to be made when deficiencies are discovered;
- Assists builders, owners and occupants in determining methods to achieve code compliance;
- Provides information to contractors, owners, occupants or other customers regarding fire and life safety codes and other regulatory requirements and specifications;
- Monitors an assigned geographical area to identify construction being performed without a permit and for dangerous structures;
- Issues notices of violations where unsafe or illegal conditions exist, and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure corrections are made;
- Investigates alleged violations of the IFC and related Town ordinances;
- Evaluates the quality of inspections performed by architects and engineers on projects which require special inspections;
- Responds to citizen complaints and requests for information regarding fire and life safety;
- Performs inspections in accordance with the IFC, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and Payson Arizona, Code of Ordinances;
- Issues correction and violation notices;
- Performs on-site inspections to ensure compliance with adopted codes;
- Maintains records of building and inspection activity, and completes related reports;
- Issues certificates and permits as appropriate;
- Assists in researching problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings, building construction and code compliance;
- Responds to complex and sensitive related fire and life safety issues;
- Assists in resolving complex and sensitive customer service issues, either personally, by telephone or in writing;
- Maintains records and documents of customer service issues and resolutions;
- Assists in administering the permitting function, including application processing, fee assessment and collection, and permit issuance;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service;
- Works with other Fire Department and Town employees to accomplish fire and life safety inspections including the Engine Company Inspection Program.
