A Day in the Life
At 7 : 00am you’re reviewing blueprints, translating sketches into a build plan, and prioritizing the tooling queue. By mid-morning you’re on the lathes, mills, grinders, and wire EDM, machining components to tight tolerances. After lunch, you’re checking alignments with dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, and micrometers before assembling and testing a new mechanism. You finish by logging preventative maintenance, ordering materials for the next tool build, and noting design tweaks to improve performance.
What You Will Tackle
- Interpret blueprints, sketches, models, and written descriptions to visualize the product, define materials, and determine the right machines and processes.
- Coordinate ordering and procurement of materials for tooling projects.
- Set up and run precision equipment—lathes, mills, grinders, and wire EDM—to produce parts and tooling components to exacting specs.
- Inspect and verify conformance by measuring dimensions, alignments, and clearances using dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, and micrometers.
- Evaluate and maintain existing dies, tools, gauges, jigs, and fixtures; recommend and implement design modifications for better construction, function, or performance.
- Develop specifications and create detailed sketches / drawings for specialty tools from general descriptions or unique requirements.
- Assemble and rigorously test newly manufactured mechanisms for proper operation and quality.
- Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and replacements on tools and dies to maximize uptime.
- Pitch in with other tool room and manufacturing tasks as needed.
