Safety Specialist

The safety coordinator inspects work areas and / or work practices to ensure compliance with safety rules and objectives; prepares and maintains reports related to safety; works under the general supervision of a plant manager; instructs employees and provides supervision on proper safety practices and techniques; ensures compliance with OSHA regulations; and monitors and ensures continued adherence of safety rules and procedures. The safety coordinator responds to workplace safety or security emergencies and issues; and inspects areas for fire-prevention equipment and other safety / first-aid supplies. Part of rescue team must be able to enter confined spaces with breathing apparatus. The safety coordinator reviews, evaluates, and analyzes work environments; designs programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors; may conduct inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals; and may be employed in the public or private sector.

Applicant must be available for training during the day for a night-shift position.

Minimum Requirements

• Be first aid and CPR trained.
• Have safety knowledge.
• Be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.
• Be able to pass company-specified performance or standards test.
• Have attended vocational school, technical school, or high school or have completed commercial, shop, technical, or on-the-job training.
• Be able to provide verifiable references of past work history.

Essential Job Functions

Working Conditions

Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. Works in all kinds of weather. May be required to perform work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. May be required to perform work alone in confined spaces. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working on scaffolding and ladders at heights greater than six feet, working over water, and subject to very dramatic temperature changes, such as when entering or exiting a tank. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.

Physical Requirements

The safety coordinator position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking and an acute sense of smell.

The U. S. Dept. of Labor classifies this job as medium work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and / or greater than negligible to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
