Tillamook County Corrections Deputy
Tillamook County is a PERS employer. New employees hired after January 1, 2025 are eligible to participate. Those that are currently participating in PERS will enter automatically, all other employees have a 6 month waiting period.
The Tillamook County Sheriff's duty is to maintain peace within the county, and as an elected official the Sheriff is accountable to the people of Tillamook County. Citizens living and visiting Tillamook County receive many services from your Sheriff's Office. Some of the major operations include our 54 dedicated employees running and maintaining the Jail, Search and Rescue on land and water, processing and delivery of civil papers, Community Corrections (Parole and Probation), Court House Security, major crime team response, and support of the municipal City Police Departments.
The Tillamook County Jail was built in 2000. It is staffed by experienced and well-trained correctional deputies and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The jail has its own kitchen that is staffed by custody workers and supervised by civilian cooks. We receive adults in custody from law enforcement agencies to include the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, the City of Tillamook Police Department, the City of Manzanita Police Department, and various other state and federal agencies.
Duties assigned to this position are not all inclusive. Additional duties may be assigned. Essential Functions include : maintaining order, discipline and security of adults in custody within the correction facility; checking adults in custody physical condition and arranging for medication and medical attention as needed; assuring a secure facility; accompanying adults in custody and / or juveniles to court appearances, physicians, hospitals, etc., serving meals; conducting periodic prisoner, cell, and area searches; testifying credibly as a witness in court and administrative proceedings; receiving incoming prisoners; booking search, fingerprinting, photographing; collecting personal property and issuing receipts; receiving and recording bail monies; releasing adults in custody at the end of sentence; processing security deposits and releases; maintaining appropriate logs, records and inventories using automated equipment and systems; transporting prisoners and persons to various locations by motor vehicle; driving a motor vehicle and maintaining a valid drivers license; direct adults in custody in work duties; participating as necessary; distributing equipment and supplies, evaluating work; ensuring clean and safe facility; representing the Sheriffs Office and answering questions and interpreting policy and procedure for law enforcement officials, attorneys, adults in custody and families and the public.
Required knowledge / skills / abilities include : considerable knowledge of policies, procedures and practices of modern law enforcement; skill in meeting and dealing with a wide range of people; report writing and statistical data compilation; accurate typing; able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; maintain records, reports and logs; adjust to priority changes and perform calmly and effectively in emergency and other conflict situations; remain calm and use good judgement during confrontational or high-pressure situations; utilize problem identification and resolution techniques and make decisions independently in accordance with established policies and use judgement in carrying out responsibilities; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, judges, federal, state and local agencies, law enforcement and emergency service personnel, medical providers, clergy, vendors, adults in custody and families and the public.
Required education / experience includes : U.S. citizenship; at least 21 years of age; no convictions by any State or Federal government of a crime punishable by imprisonment in State or Federal prison; good moral character as determined through background investigation; pass a physical and psychological examination; possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate; driving record must be free of convictions for hazardous moving violations; possess and maintain a valid Oregon drivers license; pass the POST (Police Officer Selection Test); and within one year of employment must possess a basic corrections certification from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
