Following surgery, patients transfer to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where caregivers monitor their recovery from the immediate effects of surgery and anesthesia. By joining the PACU as a Patient Care Nursing Assistant, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and observation as needed. This hands-on role requires a present, attentive and patient caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and thrive in a fast-paced environment. On this team, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments within the Cleveland Clinic system.

A caregiver in this position works evenings from 2 : 00PM 10 : 30PM, including every 5th weekend and 2 holidays per year. The weekend hours will be 9 : 00AM 5 : 30PM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will :

• Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies.
• Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing / refreshing bed linens, dressing / undressing, feeding, etc.
• Take and document the patients temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height.
• Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Bucks traction.
• Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying / utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
• Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.
• Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.
• Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
• Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and / or licensure.
• Prepare patients for meals, assist in feeding patients if necessary and distribute water and other nourishments according to patient needs in compliance with physician orders.
• Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area in timely manner.
