Assist the ophthalmologist with diagnostic and treatment-oriented procedures and administrative tasks

Responsibilities

  • Administrative Functions

Coordinate scheduling of patient appointments and surgeries

  • Patient Treatment
  • Interview patients and document ocular and medical histories.

  • Assist Physician
  • Assist the physician during diagnostic and minor surgical procedures, including instrumentation, sterile preparations and documentation.

  • May assist and / or perform chaperone duties for patient medical procedures as needed.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent with experience in an ophthalmology setting and willing to training as an Ophthalmology Assistant; OR 2. Medical Assistant who is a graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program willing to train as an Ophthalmology Assistant; OR 3. High school diploma or equivalent plus successful completion of an approved program for Ophthalmology Assistants plus a minimum of one year of satisfactory, full-time work experience under ophthalmologic supervision, including training in all skills listed in professional criteria. Equivalency criteria may be substituted as described in the JCAHPO-Blue Book.
  • EXPERIENCE

    3 months experience in an ophthalmology setting preferred.

    LICENSURE

    CPR certification for Health Care Providers.

    SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound and visual field machines.
  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people.
  • Knowledge of CPT & ICD-9 coding procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • PHYSICAL DEMAND

    MMR is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or evidence of prior chicken pox is required. Hepatitis B (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood / body fluids. Tdap and influenza vaccination are strongly encouraged.
