Position Summary

The intercollegiate athletics program is an integral part of the university striving to achieve the same standards of excellence in athletics that exist within academic programs. The program is concerned with the physical and mental welfare of the student and strives to ensure that every student-athlete has the opportunity to succeed academically and obtain a degree. Sport programs are a vital function of the University at large. The position will be responsible for assisting the Director of Track and Field in organizing, preparing, and conducting individual and team practices, training and competition with Track & Field, and Cross Country.

Job Duties

• Candidates must be able to teach proper technique and skill development in various aspects of track & field and cross country.
• Candidates should have a complete and thorough understanding of track & field and cross country and be able to instruct student-athletes in small group and one-on-one settings.
• This position requires the ability to help recruit potential student-athletes.
• Candidates must have the ability to successfully impart track-specific knowledge and cross country and student-athletes.
• Previous coaching and / or playing experience on the college level is highly desired.
• The ability to identify and recruit student-athletes is required.
• This position requires well-developed communication skills, as well as strong time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to work weekends and evenings is required.
• This position requires extensive travel.
• This position will assist the head coach in devising methods by which the team can achieve success and with the establishment and development of the team atmosphere. Also in creating a positive atmosphere for the successful recruitment of student-athletes, promotion of community involvement by all team personnel.
• Contributes to the visibility and exposure of the institution to the community at large on a (near) daily basis.
• Facilitates the entire educational experience of the participant and at the same time contributes to the development of players, teachers, coaches, and trainers.
• Capitalizes and enhances alumni, family and friends willingness to contribute to the support of individual programs, the entire athletic program, and the institution at large through corporate sponsorship programs, endowments, and gifting.
• Highlights the academic successes of the athlete as compatible with athletic success.
• Establishes the opportunity for personal growth and development of the individual within an organized team structure that imitates society at large.
• Contributes to the recruitment and retention of students thus benefiting the university.

Collaboration & Coordination

The supervisor will meet weekly to go through practice planning and performance updates to ensure progress is being meet and goals are achieved. Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance - daily interaction includes rules interpretations, recruiting permission, reporting violations, discussion and advisement. Director of Marketing & Sales - cyclic interaction for track and field / cross country promotional events and activities. Director of Communications - weekly interaction (varies depending upon season) for media guides and press releases on honors, awards, statistics. Student-Athlete Academic Support Staff - daily; facilities / ticket manager - weekly; equipment manager - daily; athletic trainers - daily; business office and admin staff - daily; conference and scheduling, residence life and food service programs; financial aids office; visit center and admissions.
