Job Summary
The Mechatronics Engineer will be responsible for providing both mechanical and electrical engineering support in the design, installation, start-up, and debugging of manufacturing and research process equipment. This role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams-including mechanical, electrical, controls, facilities, IT, and operations-to ensure successful project execution.
The position involves the practical application of control systems, instrumentation, motion systems / robotics, programming, mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and machine design principles to develop and optimize complex automated equipment and processes.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement mechatronic systems and automation solutions to improve manufacturing and research operations
- Coordinate and manage project tasks and workplans to meet schedule and technical goals
- Provide hands-on support for equipment installation, testing, and troubleshooting
- Design and integrate PLC / PC-based process and automation control systems
- Verify equipment builds, layouts, and wiring against engineering drawings
- Ensure all activities comply with safety standards and best practices
- Update system drawings, schematics, and project documentation
- Prepare and deliver technical reports, project documentation, and presentations to stakeholders on progress and results
Required Skills
Solid foundation in electrical engineering principlesProficient with mechanical and electrical design software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor)Experience with industrial control systems and software (Rockwell, Omron, or Beckhoff)Understanding of electrical panel layouts, schematics, system testing, and safe troubleshooting techniquesDemonstrated experience applying scientific methods to execute and analyze experimentsStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independentlyCapable of managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneouslyStrong collaboration skills with diverse and multidisciplinary teamsBasic project management skills including scoping, budgeting, and schedulingDesired Skills
Experience with mechanical equipment design, installation, start-up, and debugging in a research or development environmentHands-on wiring experience including cabinet building, field wiring, labeling, over-current protection, and shielding for sensitive circuitsFamiliarity with IEC 61131-3 programming standardsExperience with programming languages such as C, C++, Python, or MATLABSoft Skills
Strong verbal and written communication skillsAbility to clearly explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholdersExperience preparing and delivering technical presentations and reportsStrong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teamsAbility to build and manage relationships with vendors, suppliers, and external partnersEducation and Experience
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical / Electrical Technology, Mechanical, or Electrical EngineeringMinimum of 3 years of industry experience in automation or control systems engineeringTravel Requirements
