Overview

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more to open access space. The Space Systems business designs and builds a wide range of satellites, payloads, and components, including spacecraft used on NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components for the James Webb Space Telescope. Neutron is a planned medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. This role supports the Neutron Recovery program, focused on downrange recovery assets.

Electrical Engineer II - Neutron Recovery

The Electrical Engineer II – Neutron Recovery position will be based at Rocket Lab's headquarters in Long Beach, CA or at the facility in Middle River, MD. You will be responsible for the design and development of all Electrical equipment on Recovery assets to support Neutron downrange recovery. You will interface with critical teams within the Neutron development program including Ground Systems, GNC, Software, Avionics, Mechanical Systems and Propulsion. You will oversee successful Neutron Recovery program designs and hardware to enable development, testing, flight, and recovery.

What you'll get to do :

  • Work as part of a team of engineers through the early stages of developing the Neutron Recovery program
  • Own critical electrical system designs, analyses, and other technical details to support team objectives, including :
  • Electrical Power Distribution
  • Switch Gear
  • Motor Control Centers
  • Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) & Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Units
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Serve as technical expert for marine electrical system designs required for Neutron Recovery including 110V-690V AC Power Systems
  • Develop technical details for Recovery designs, including what hardware to build and how tests are performed to maximize progress
  • Support Recovery system fabrication and testing remotely and onsite as needed at Wallops Island and other facilities

You'll bring these qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, naval, marine, systems or aerospace engineering, or related field
  • 2+ years professional experience designing, building, operating or maintaining complex marine or electrical hardware
  • Experience successfully leading a team through a challenging technical project or program
  • These qualifications would be nice to have :

  • 2+ years professional experience in Maritime and / or Electrical field
  • Experience designing and building complex marine electrical systems
  • Ability to read and understand power and control schematics
  • Experience with industrial electrical controls and drives
  • Experience relating to aerospace vehicles / payloads, automotive, aircraft, or marine electrical equipment
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented with a drive for continuous improvement
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high-stress, and remote environments
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritize work, and make resource allocation recommendations involving risk and uncertainty
  • Additional requirements

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus
  • Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing
  • Must be physically able to commute to buildings
  • Occasional exposure to dust, fumes and moderate levels of noise
  • Level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, education, and experience.
