Job Summary :

The position of Mechanical Estimator is key to the financial and technical success of the company. Among other responsibilities, an estimator is responsible for nurturing customer relationships, finding profitable project opportunities, thoroughly and accurately estimating the costs of projects, bidding tasks, and securing contracts.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Develops and nurtures relationships with contractors, owners, governmental agencies and other potential customers or influencers.
  • Responds to inquiries from potential clients for information about the capabilities of Ainsworth.
  • Tracks and follows up on inquiries.
  • Reviews bid opportunities to evaluate the fit of prospective projects to the capabilities and business objectives of Ainsworth; makes recommendations concerning whether to bid projects; adds selected opportunities to add to the bid log.
  • Maintains professional, cooperative relationships with subcontractors, engineers, architects and owners.
  • Maintains a high level of expertise with the estimating software system and accounting system.
  • Complies with corporate policies and procedures.
  • Stays current with industry standards, codes and technologies.

Estimating, Engineering and Bidding

  • Reads and understands the specifications, drawings, notes, etc. in the bid request.
  • Discusses any issues that require clarification with the potential client.
  • Visits the job site to ensure that unusual site or production requirements are properly considered in the bid.
  • Obtains pricing information from vendors, if necessary, for inclusion in the bid.
  • Compare proposals for price, conformance to the specifications, confirm correct quantities
  • Takes off each opportunity, using the computer system, or an alternative as approved by management.
  • Completes a bid package in accordance with company policy and customer requirements.
  • Reviews the estimate and the bid package with the Management team in accordance with company policy after bid date.
  • Communicate with vendors to ensure that the bids / prices arrive in a timely fashion
  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with critical suppliers
  • Build procurement organizational capabilities and improve procurement efficiency
  • Follows up on the bid on a timely basis and provides post-bid information, if required.
  • Follows up with the potential clients on lost bids to determine the reason and debriefs the President.
  • Tracks plan sets, addendums, and reports and has full understanding of plan edits and evolutions during process.
  • Facilitates subcontractor pre-qualification process
  • Updates the bid log as bid status changes.
  • Update budgets as needed and as requested by the Manager of Preconstruction.
  • Identifies opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings.
  • Communicates and coordinates with all design disciplines to increase plan accuracy.
  • Identifies pre-bid RFI’s and potential plan errors early in process to reduce RFI’s and plan revisions during construction phase.
  • Carefully inputs the building specifications to calculate the load which is reviewed with the PE.
  • Discusses the zoning with the PE to determine system type options.
  • Lays out the system and sizes all devices, ductwork and piping in accordance with current code requirements.
  • Reviews the final design with the PE.
  • Confers with the client and other design team members to ensure coordination between trades.
  • Leads the post-bid value engineering effort involving the Project Manager if one has been appointed.
  • Creates, reviews, and evolves historical cost data to increase its accuracy as a resource.
  • Meets with the appropriate personnel as required for Turnover and Pre-planning meetings.
  • Participates in the Job Completion Review meeting.
  • Qualifications :

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in the HVAC industry (with engineering or construction degree, 5+ years experience required without)
  • Engineering degree or Construction Management degree preferred
  • Technical degree or associates degree in a related field will be considered
  • Individuals with HVAC or commercial construction management in the NYC area and associated experience are welcome to apply
  • Must have excellent communication, presentation & organizational skills
  • Must have working knowledge of all typical computer programs used in this work environment such as MS Office, Vista and / or Windows 7 (MS Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook), Blue Beam software a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • This role is also eligible to receive an annual bonus that aligns with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary and are based on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.
