Schedule details : 2 shifts of 8 hours (11 : 00 PM - 07 : 30 AM) and 2 shifts of 12 hours (07 : 00 PM - 07 : 30 AM), totaling 40 hours per week.
Holidays and every other weekend are expected.
Scheduled weekends off must have coverage found unless previously specified within the RDO.
Blocked scheduling cannot be accommodated.
Training will be provided for charge nurse responsibilities.
There is a possibility of floating to a similar unit within the hospital.
The uniform policy for RNs requires navy blue scrubs.
Unit description : The unit consists of 25 beds for acute inpatient psychiatry.
Staffing includes at least 5 personnel for 18-25 patients (3 licensed staff, and 2 other staff).
There are at least 4 personnel for 11-17 patients (with 3 licensed staff).
One RN will assume a charge nurse role, another will oversee all admissions for that shift, and a third will manage medication distribution for all patients during their shift.
RNs are trained in all three roles.
There are also 2 float positions, typically filled by Mental Health Assistants, but RNs or LPNs can work in this role as well.
Responsibilities include conducting rounds, taking vital signs, distributing meals, providing patient care, and facilitating group sessions.
All staff positions carry patient loads and can lead patient groups, conduct rounds, and take vital signs.
The staff-to-patient ratio can be up to 5 : 1 but is often lower.
Patient population includes individuals presenting with acute psychosis, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, suicidal and homicidal behavior, and dual diagnosis.
For any emergent medical issues, emergency services must be contacted.
Seclusion is not offered, and restraints are used only as a last resort after all other de-escalation techniques have been attempted.
Nursing and clinical staff manage all restraints on the unit, with security staff available for support during crises involving patient escalation, manual holds, or restraints.
