Job Description

The City of Renton is recruiting to fill an Airport Operations Manager vacancy at the Renton Municipal Airport. Lead the operations that keep Renton Municipal Airport soaring. As the Airport Operations Manager, you'll oversee and coordinate a wide range of airfield operations and maintenance activities, ensuring safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. This hands-on leadership role involves supervising staff, managing budgets, and developing both short- and long-term operational plans. You'll coach and mentor a dedicated team, foster strong relationships with internal and external partners, and play a key role in shaping the airport's future through strategic planning, policy administration, and public engagement. Contribute to the City's vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage, plan, organize and supervise the daily operations and maintenance programs, activities, tasks and special projects of the Airport as assigned.
  • Perform a wide range of complex and interdependent duties to ensure that the airport system operates efficiently and effectively for the traveling public, consistent with local, state and federal standards, specifications, practices and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the following : FAR Parts 139 and 77, FAA advisory circulars and TSR Part 1542 City, County and Airport regulations and documents.
  • Recruit, train, recognize, develop, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff.
  • Recommend actions regarding hiring, promoting, coaching, mentoring, and disciplining.
  • Delegate / assign, prioritize, review, and ensure timely completion of duties of assigned staff.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively using a two-way radio in a fast-paced environment.
  • Responsible for snow removal planning and coordination.
  • Provide technical and policy information to the public and meet with complainants to resolve problems related to airport functions and maintain positive relations.
  • Conduct inspections of airfield facilities, including grounds, runways, taxiways, aircraft aprons, gates and service roadways to ensure safety, security and efficiency of operations and expeditious flow of aircraft.
  • Monitor and maintain constant awareness of all facilities on the airport grounds involving the various tenants, fixed base operators and the public. Take corrective action on issues as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies occurring at the airport; participate and / or lead the evaluation and determination of action to be taken in response to airport emergencies.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining an airport maintenance management program and the airport emergency response plan; track annual accomplishments.
  • Assist in managing the access control system, airport ground vehicle operating program (including classroom training), and airport security program.
  • Develop and coordinate a comprehensive public relations outreach program to improve and expand the effectiveness of the airport noise program.
  • Provide leadership and project review for private development projects affecting the airport's airspace.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of projects on the airport grounds or with the assistance of outside consultants, coordinate activities with City departments and personnel and outside agencies as necessary.
  • Perform hangar inspections and inventory and draft corrective action notices to tenants.
  • Maintain documents and a working knowledge of underground utilities and services and tenant property lease lines.
  • Provide opportunities for professional development to staff.
  • Evaluate employee performance; conduct consistent staff and 1 : 1 check in meetings with direct reports.
  • Delegate, review and ensure timely completion of duties of assigned staff.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of department goals that support the City's Mission and Business Plan.
  • Train staff; set specific and measurable standards and goals.
  • Evaluate Airport operations (division) to improve service, productivity, and efficiency, and resolve work-related complaints and issues that cannot be addressed by staff.
  • Evaluate employee performance and provide professional development.
  • Initiate hiring process and coordinate the onboarding and training of new employees.
  • Prepare budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures and capital purchases, (submit periodic budget updates and monitor assigned performance measures).
  • Assist in the development and updating of City policies, ensure proper interpretation and administration of policies by staff.
  • Create an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by welcoming and meeting the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Use progressive discipline when appropriate with guidance from a Director / Administrator.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation Management, Airport Operations, Business, or related field.
  • 2 years of experience in airport operations to include fiscal management, technical airport operations, regulatory compliance, or field operations.
  • Or minimum 4 years of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects / programs related to airport or business operations.
  • AAAE Ace Airfield Operations within one year of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Successful passing of a required driving record check.
  • Successful passing of a required background check.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

  • Drive and perform fieldwork.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Frequent communication with City employees and customers.
  • Move items weighing up to 20 pounds on occasion.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT :

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment and involves moving throughout the airport and grounds.
  • Work evening and / or weekend hours as needed /
  • Night meetings may be required.
  • Noise level indoors is moderately quiet.
  • Noise level in the field is extremely loud.
