The Mohs Histotechnologist performs specialized histologic preparation of frozen and fixed tissue specimens during Mohs micrographic surgery. Working under time-sensitive conditions, they process, section, stain, and prepare slides for immediate microscopic evaluation by the Mohs surgeon. They ensure optimal quality, accurate labeling, documentation, and maintain laboratory standards for patient care.
Key Responsibilities / Duties
- Receive, log, and label surgical specimens from the Mohs operating suite.
- Prepare fresh (frozen) tissue and fixed tissue specimens for processing.
- Operate cryostat, microtome, embedding stations, staining instruments, cover-slippers, and other histology lab equipment.
- Section frozen tissues, mount sections on slides, and perform rapid H&E (or other) staining for intraoperative review.
- Monitor stain quality, troubleshoot staining issues, and repeat / recut sections per surgeon request.
- Recut or re-embed blocks when deeper levels are required.
- Label, track, and distribute slides and blocks to the surgeon as needed.
- Maintain and document quality control checks, reagent logs, temperature logs, and equipment calibration.
- Clean, maintain, and perform preventive maintenance on histology equipment; troubleshoot as needed.
- Order, inventory, and restock lab reagents, consumables, slides, cassettes, stains, and supplies.
- Adhere to all safety, biohazard, regulatory (e.g. CLIA, CAP) and lab compliance standards.
- Participate in quality assurance / quality improvement programs, including slide review, error tracking, corrective actions.
- Train / mentor new or cross-trained staff in Mohs histotechniques, lab protocols and workflow.
- Occasionally support other dermatology or pathology lab sites or cover shifts in related labs, as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient data and compliance with HIPAA.
Qualifications / Skills
- Preferred : Education : Associates degree (or equivalent) in histotechnology, medical laboratory science, biology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Preferred : Certification as Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) by ASCP or equivalent.
- Prior experience in a histology laboratory; prior Mohs lab experience strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with frozen sectioning, embedding, microtomy, staining techniques, and rapid turnaround workflows.
- Strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and ability to work under time pressure.
- Ability to interpret tissue under microscope, identify epidermis / dermis, margins, etc.
- Good problem-solving skills; ability to troubleshoot technical or equipment issues.
- Effective communication and collaboration with surgical, clinical, and pathology teams.
- Organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks concurrently.
- Knowledge of lab safety, quality control, equipment maintenance, and documentation practices.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, perform fine manipulations, and work in lab environment (chemical exposure, cold temps, etc.).
- Flexibility and reliabilitywillingness to be responsive to intraoperative demands and occasional overtime or shift adjustments.
