Senior Portfolio Manager Commercial Banking Team Lead

A well-established financial institution with a strong presence across West Michigan is seeking an experienced Senior Portfolio Manager Commercial Banking Team Lead.

This is a high-impact role overseeing a sizable commercial loan portfolio and leading a team of Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts. The ideal candidate is a seasoned commercial banker with formal credit training, strong analytical skills, and a collaborative leadership style.

You'll work directly with senior lenders, manage complex relationships, and help mentor and grow the next generation of banking professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts to strengthen underwriting quality and portfolio performance.
  • Oversee renewals, covenant testing, risk rating, and exception management for a portfolio exceeding $500MM.
  • Review and refine credit presentations to ensure sound structure, risk mitigation, and policy compliance.
  • Directly manage a small book of complex and strategic commercial relationships.
  • Partner with commercial lenders to balance new business development with ongoing portfolio management.
  • Serve as a liaison between credit and lending teams to align risk and relationship goals.
  • Contribute to process improvement, staff development, and portfolio growth initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting (Master's preferred).
  • Formal credit training and deep understanding of commercial underwriting and risk management.
  • 10+ years of commercial banking experience with emphasis on credit, lending, or portfolio management.
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring a credit or lending team strongly preferred.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to manage complex relationships and collaborate within a team environment.

  • Competitive base salary : $155,000$165,000 plus annual performance bonus.
