Police Officer Trainee

The City of Sausalito invites applications for the position of Police Officer Trainee. Pay is $35.31 hourly during academy attendance. Upon successful completion of the academy, the starting salary is $91,811 annually. A hiring bonus of $5,000 upon academy graduation and $5,000 after successful completion of the probationary period is available ($10,000 total).

The Police Officer Trainee learns to enforce Federal, State, and local laws and to respond to calls for the protection of life and property by attending a basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified training academy to obtain the basic skills and fitness level necessary for the performance of Police Officer duties. This position requires a thorough background investigation, a polygraph / voice stress analysis examination, a psychological assessment, and a medical exam prior to appointment.

The ideal candidate will :

  • Possess good customer service skills.
  • Exercise sound judgment and initiative.
  • Be adaptable and able to occasionally work under stressful or difficult conditions.
  • Interact comfortably and effectively with a diverse population of individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Previous experience is not required but experience in a law enforcement environment is highly desirable.
  • Must be 21 years of age at the date of hire.
  • Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions.
  • Must be lawfully able to possess a firearm.

Qualifications include :

  • Education : Equivalent to graduation from an accredited U.S. high school; passing score on the General Education Development (GED) test; OR possession of a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university. College coursework in police science, criminal justice, or a related field is desirable.
  • Experience : Not required but desired.
  • Special Requirements : Must be 21 years of age as of the date of hire per California Government Code 1031.4; Must be legally authorized to work in the United States per California Government Code 1031 and Federal Code 274a.2; Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions; Must be lawfully able to possess a firearm.
  • Licenses / Certifications : Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
