POSITION : Special Education Teacher
DIVISION : Education - Springfield
REPORTS TO : Principal
$47,000- $83,000 (commensurate on education and years of teaching experience)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Must hold a valid Illinois Learning Behavior Specialist-1 teaching certificate
2. May work only in a grade and level that matches the grade level listed on teaching license
3. Maintain a valid Illinois driver’s license and qualify as a DCFS driver
(Certain employees may be exempt due to date of hire.)
4. Successful background clearance, physical, and drug / alcohol screening and the ability to meet all licensing standards of the Department of Human Services and the Department of Child and Family Services
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Minimum of 3 years experience as a special education classroom teacher
2. Previous supervisory experience
3. Good interpersonal skills
STANDARD OF PERFORMANCE :
The classroom teacher is responsible for directing education programming activities in the classroom environment and shall serve as lead workers for staff assigned in their classroom. In this role, teachers will be responsible for conducting performance evaluations for Lead Teacher Aides and Paraprofessionals under their supervision. The teacher ensures that the events of the school day and the staff interaction with the students are geared to promote the physical, social, behavioral, academic, and emotional development of the students of the Hope School Learning Center. The teacher shall develop assessment based IEP goals / objectives and education routines that provide a functional age appropriate curriculum for the students. The teacher shall prepare lesson plans based upon the student’s IEP goals and objectives and shall provide both educational instruction to students and guidance / direction to classroom staff at the grade level assigned to teach on the provision of educational instruction to students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
1. Prepares assessments and present levels of performance for IEP meetings and participates in development of appropriate IEP goals for youth.
2. Develops and implements educational activities and programs in accordance with IEP goals.
3. Ensures that educational activates and programs are functional and age appropriate to promote achievement of each student’s IEP goals.
4. Trains and directs the work of the classroom Lead Teacher Aides and Paraprofessionals.
5. Evaluates Lead Teacher in accordance with essential function defined in their job descriptions.
6. Plans daily and weekly schedules for each youth.
7. Completes required ISBE documentation accurately and promptly, such as alternate assessments and progress reports.
8. Maintain current classroom information book, student program books, lesson plans, student’s files, and emergency packets and posts class scheduled.
9. Ensures Paraprofessionals complete data entry on appropriate forms for program goals, behavioral health, and nursing in a timely manner (IEP goals, GERs, TLOGS and data sheets.).
10. Collects and analyzes IEP goal data of youth and evaluates need to change Youth’s IEP goals.
11. Follows proper channels of communication defined in the education department’s organization chart and that of The Hope Institute for Children and Families.
12. Collaborates with team members in interdisciplinary tem meetings, interdepartmental meetings, and special staffing for students.
13. Determines and uses appropriate materials, devices and equipment necessary for educational activities and programs.
14. Uses classroom management skills that foster a positive and professional manner.
15. Maintains regular communication with parents or guardians regarding youth’s educational progress, program and activities.
16. Assumes responsibilities for assuring compliance of student rights and program delivery as defined in the Illinois Department of Mental Health Code and the Confidentiality Act, as well as the Child Care Act of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK COMPLIANCE (in particular, as it relates to)
1. Follows proper call off procedure by notifying the Principal of absence at a minimum of 1 hour prior to start of shift (585-5122).
2. Follows the assigned schedule of 7 : 30 AM – 3 : 00 PM, Monday through Friday.
3. Follows proper call off procedure by notifying the Education Support Coordinator of absence at a minimum of 1 hour prior to start of shift (585-5231).
4. Use vacation days on non-school days only.
5. Follows the assigned schedule of 7 : 30 AM – 3 : 00 PM, Monday through Friday.
6. Follows procedures for breaks; time-off requests; use of personal, vacation, and sick time; hours of work, etc.
7. Adheres to break and lunch schedules.
8. Adheres to student assignments made by the classroom teacher or LTA (supporting the plan for “student rotation”).
9. Adheres to our “no cell phone policy” use of cell phones in “cell phone zones”.
10. Adheres to our no food / beverage / newspaper use during school hours (7 : 30 a.m. to 3 : 30 p.m.)
11. Actively participates in before and after school activities, including staff participation in team meetings, helping with material selection, clean-up activities, preparing and reviewing daily lessons, entering data, reviewing TLOGS and GERs
OTHER RESPONSIBILITES :
1. Meets the criteria for the Rules for Non-Public Facilities Education Handicapped Students under the Section
14-7.02 of The School Code of Illinois.
2. Meets the standard criteria of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Test of Adopted Rules,
Section 404.20.
3. Models appropriate behavior to the students (manner of speech, appropriate dress, etc.)
4. Treats youth with dignity and respect.
5. Recognizes behavioral signs of illness, pain, injury, discomfort or any deviation from normal behavior and promptly reports these deviations to the appropriate person.
6. Assumes responsibility for completing support task (i.e., general housekeeping) as assigned.
7. Communicates with staff, students, and others in a courteous, professional manner.
8. Assumes responsibilities as a mandated reporter, concerning incidents of purported abuse / neglect of students as outlined in the agency’s policies and procedures.
9. Assumes responsibility for documentation of internal reporting.
10. Attends required training.
11. Attends meetings pertaining to students, as requested.
12. Completes professional development requirements as listed in The Hope School Professional Development Guideline.
13. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
