General Description
Performs highly complex (senior-level) work overseeing correctional staff who provide direct care to juveniles in a correctional residential facility. Oversees daily operations of a juvenile residential unit; supports and mentors correctional officers on their unit; ensures safety and security of youth and staff; works directly with youth, coaching their personal development per their treatment plans. May plan, assign, and / or supervise the work of others. Responsible for the development of the JCOs on the dorm and ensuring JCOs are trained appropriately on dorm and youth management. Provides on the job training to new JCOs assigned to their unit. Maintains a consistent effort to ensure safe environments and employs security measures when youth, staff, or others are in danger. Interacts with youth to maintain structure and understand brain development in youth with complex trauma. Builds healthy relationships and recognizes progress and good choices. Responds to youth grievances. May act as Campus Shift Administrator.
Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Works assigned shift; may be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week, be on-call, and may travel occasionally.
Pre-Service Training Academy Requirement : Newly hired JCOs or rehired JCOs separated more than 18 months will attend pre-service training and full-time on-the-job training. JCOs returning within 18 months will not attend the academy and will be placed in full-time status on their date of employment.
Essential Duties
Provides on the job training to Juvenile Correctional Officers on their assigned unit; teaches dorm operations and models appropriate methods and interventions.
Ensures JCOs complete dorm modules and are ready for sole supervision certification.
Coaches and models appropriate youth engagement and dorm management techniques; works with dorm leadership to identify retention trends and applies retention and support strategies for JCOs on their unit.
Provides behavior change strategies with youth to increase positive behavior; holds youth accountable and coaches use of identified DBT skills; models intervention strategies for staff on the dorm.
Helps youth identify responses to stress and triggers, and works with youth to increase emotional self-regulation; coaches youth to resolve conflicts with peers and staff as appropriate.
Maintains regulation and situational awareness; remains calm during stress and crisis; helps JCOs use self-regulation to co-regulate youth.
Understands youths target behavior, reinforcers, skill focus, behavior change strategies, and safety needs; supports staff with knowledge of these factors.
Participates in the Youth Service Team and contributes to each youth's treatment plan; observes and informs staff daily of significant behavioral and treatment-related events; performs all essential duties of a juvenile correctional officer and models competency; maintains privacy and follows policies and laws regarding youth records; completes and maintains required records accurately; approves / denies timesheets by deadline; performs related duties as needed.
Performs duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures; reports and corrects safety hazards.
