Position Summary : The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Spanish in Modern Peninsular Literary and Cultural Studies, to begin in August 2026. Applicants must have a PhD in Spanish or Comparative Literature or a related field by the time of appointment in August 2026. We seek a dynamic scholar whose research centers on the literature and culture of modern Spain (19th century to the present). We are especially interested in candidates whose work engages with performance studies, especially flamenco; poetry and poetics; Lusophone cultures; visual culture and film; or critical approaches to gender, race, and migration. Scholars with creative practice in addition to scholarly research—such as creative writing, translation, or public humanities work—are also encouraged to apply.
The new faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Modern Peninsular Literary and Cultural Studies and supervise masters and doctoral students. They will be expected to contribute to UNM’s vibrant community of students and scholars and to participate actively in departmental and university service.
