Description :

Job Purpose and Objectives : One of the primary duties of a patrol deputy is to deter crime through regular patrolling of neighborhoods, highways, and other public spaces. Ensuring the safety and well-being of the community by responding to emergencies, accidents, and calls for service. Enforcing laws by issuing citations, making arrests, and handling various law enforcement duties like traffic violations, disturbances, and public order issues. Maintaining a visible presence in the community to promote a sense of safety and to act as a deterrent to criminal activity.

  • Cultural Awareness : A patrol deputy should be aware of the cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds of the people they serve. This awareness helps in understanding the perspectives, values, and potential needs of community members. Recognizing the history of different groups, particularly marginalized or historically oppressed communities, helps to avoid biases and facilitates respectful interactions.
  • Respect for Cultural Differences : Deputies should be educated about cultural differences, such as customs, communication styles and appropriate behaviors. A deputy should be respectful and mindful when interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds, avoiding stereotyping and discrimination.
  • Effective Communication : Deputies should have access to language resources to communicate effectively with individuals who speak languages other than English. Being able to communicate directly or through an interpreter can help ensure individuals feel understood. Listening attentively builds rapport and can de-escalate potential tense situations.
  • Bias Awareness and Implicit Bias Training : Deputies need to understand potential biases and learn strategies to address them. Take regular training classes on implicit biases to help make more objective decisions.
  • Community Engagement and Relationship Building : Deputies need to build strong, trust-based relationships with individuals from various backgrounds. Work collaboratively with community members to help understand local concerns and solve problems together.
  • Legal and Human Rights Knowledge : Deputies need to have knowledge of cultural rights, to help serve all individuals in a fair and lawful manner. Understand the importance of avoiding racial profiling. Promote equality and fairness to create positive relationships with communities.
  • Education and Continuous Learning : Deputies must have ongoing education on cultural competency for regular training to help them stay updated on the cultural dynamics within the communities. Should be open to learning directly from the people they serve.

Essential Duties :

  • Patrolling assigned areas, which include neighborhoods, highways, business districts, and other public spaces to deter criminal activity, ensure safety, and maintain visibility.
  • Respond to Emergency and Non-Emergency Calls promptly related to crimes in progress, traffic accidents, disturbances, medical emergencies, and other urgent situations. Also handle routine calls such as noise complaints, property disputes, and community requests for assistance.
  • Prevent crime through a visible presence in the community. Interact with residents to build relationships, provide crime prevention advice, and encourage community cooperation.
  • Responsible for enforcing traffic laws by issuing citations for speeding, running red lights, driving under the influence, and other traffic infractions.
  • Responsible for enforcing criminal laws, arrest suspects, and investigate crimes that may occur.
  • Respond to traffic accidents, assess the scene for injuries or hazards, and provide emergency assistance as needed. Then document the details of the accident.
  • Assist people in need by interacting with residents and local businesses to understand their concerns and offer safety tips.
  • Respond to natural disasters or large-scale emergencies to ensure public safety.
  • Handle high-stress situations, such as hostage scenarios, barricades, or violent disturbances, while working with specialized units.
  • May be required to testify in court about incidents they investigated or arrests they made, providing testimony based on their reports.
  • May work with other agencies to assist in other jurisdictions during large scale events or emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Requirements :

    Position Requirements and Skills :

  • Must be 21 years old
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must complete or have completed an accredited police academy such as KLETC
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must have excellent verbal and communication skills

    o Vision Abilities – close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    o Lifting / Moving – Occasionally; seldom lifting / moving a maximum weight of 20 pounds.
