Polysomnographic Technician – Brown University Health
Location : Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI. Work Type : Part Time. Shift : Shift 3. Union : UNAP.
Responsibilities
- Receives and reviews requests for polysomnographic testing. Prepares laboratory and obtains supplies to accommodate number of patients scheduled for testing.
- Sets up and calibrates testing and treatment equipment : PC-driven digital polygraph, oximeter, capnograph, RIP, CPAP / Bi-Level airway management equipment, and videotaping equipment according to established procedures.
- Explains procedures to patients and family members to gain cooperation and to maintain a calm environment that supports natural sleep.
- Places and attaches electrodes and monitoring devices; ensures correct electrode placement and operates videotaping equipment to capture breathing patterns accurately.
- Operates PC-driven digital polysomnography to record sleep stages and perform real-time analysis to determine severity of obstructive sleep apnea and initiate treatment protocols where indicated.
- Reviews outputs, makes adjustments for accurate tracings of multiple variables (EEG, EOG, EMG, heart rate, respiratory effort, airflow, end-tidal CO2, oxygen saturation).
- Monitors patient progress, remains alert for apnea episodes, notifies physicians as needed, and initiates CPR if indicated.
- Reviews scores and final tracings, summarizes results, and prepares written reports for physician review.
- Maintains inventory and performs routine cleaning and maintenance; participates in equipment evaluations and purchases as needed.
- Participates in sleep-related clinical research and provides assistance with computerized analysis of results.
- Upholds quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control policies.
Qualifications
Education / Knowledge : Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care, Biology, Health Sciences, or successful completion of a polysomnographic certification program, or equivalent. Registration required within 90 days of employment.Technical : Thorough understanding of PC-driven digital polysomnography, RIP, and flow-volume loops; ability to apply pulmonary flow-volume loops for OSA treatment.Computer : Proficiency with basic PC skills; ability to operate and troubleshoot equipment; knowledge of electronics and electrical safety.Clinical : Knowledge of sleep staging and the ability to interpret and summarize results for physician evaluation.Communication : Interpersonal skills to explain procedures and calm patients to support natural sleep.Physical : Ability to stand for extended periods, sit at a computer, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform minor repairs on equipment; ability to assist in moving or positioning patients.Experience : Six months of previous polysomnographic, respiratory care, or related patient-care experience preferred. Registration preferred. Certified Polysomnographic Technologist accepted with requirement to earn registration (RPSGT) within 90 days of hire.Work Environment and Requirements
Generally in a sleep laboratory setting.Ability to stand for extended periods and to sit for long periods at a computer.Ability to remain focused and alert during shifts; ability to record high-quality data.Independent action within department policies; no supervisory responsibilities.Equal Opportunity
