ACADEMIC AFFAIRS ANNOUNCES AN OPENING IN THE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES DIVISION
POSITION : Academic Advisor, Social Sciences Division
Description of Duties :
Responsible for working closely with all Social Sciences majors to assist with enrollment and progress towards completion of an Associate’s Degree. Collaborate with students and faculty to embrace communication and to identify barriers related to student retention and graduation. Provide overall advisement for Social Sciences majors. Build and sustain a culture of retention and completion within the Division. Organize transfer trips to area four-year schools and host transfer workshops in the Social Sciences Division. Assist first-time full-time Social Sciences majors in the creation and maintenance of graduation plans and academic goals. Collaborate with other advisors to create a filing system to track student credits and progress toward completion of certificates and graduation. Ensure all eligible students apply to a four-year college program. Provide support to students during their scholarship search, application and award processes. Maintain external relationships in order to bring services and opportunities to the College (i.e. SAT test preparation courses, OGET test preparation, guest speakers, etc.). Create a Post-Graduation Advisory Group to identify strengths and weaknesses of graduation plans and to identify barriers to graduation. Work closely with Social Sciences faculty to identify at-risk students in need of student services on Campus and engage at-risk students in early alert. Assist in the development of academic schedules for new and continuing majors in the Social Sciences Division. Assist students with the graduation application process. Collaborate with faculty, administrators, Campus departments, area high schools and community agencies to identify, define and meet student educational planning / placement needs, goals and objectives. Work closely with services for students including, but not limited to : tutoring, math, reading, writing and computer labs, Career Services, Disability Services, student clubs / organizations and Financial Aid. Assist in the development of advisement approaches for changing student populations including minority students, non-traditional students and at-risk students. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor’s Degree. Two (2) years’ experience working in higher education with students. Proven effectiveness in dealing with a diverse employee and external customer-based population. Excellent oral / written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Outlook and Excel). Ability to multi-task, adhere to strict deadlines and be attentive to detail. Display the highest degree of professionalism and confidentiality at all times. Ability to work individually and as a member of a team. Light lifting up to 10 lbs. and light carrying up to 10 lbs. required. Ability to reach above shoulder. Periods of time spent sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending and stooping.
Desired Qualifications :
Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling, Education, Student Services or related discipline. Experience in community college setting. Demonstrated experience working with students and / or academic advising.
