Overview
Under general direction, the position performs skilled to advanced craft-mechanical air conditioning and HVAC systems work in installation, maintenance and service tasks for the school district. The employee performs master level HVAC trades work with independence and latitude. The position ensures provision of fresh, environmentally safe, and dehumidified conditioned air for the assigned region.
Responsibilities
- Responds to internal and external customers promptly and courteously, representing OCPS positively.
- Performs skilled to advanced craft-mechanical HVAC work in installation, repair, maintenance, and service for an assigned region.
- Observes and tests malfunctioning systems; reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and manuals for installations or service orders.
- Installs, maintains or services systems and components including pneumatic controls and preventive maintenance.
- Installs or replaces components : compressors, window units, motors, bearings, fans, pumps, piping, filters, sensors, drains, valves, and related components.
- Performs routine testing of system performance : starters, relays, coils, voltages, pumping capacities, transformers, seals and bearings, and related parameters.
- Troubleshoots, adjusts, calibrates, repairs, and replaces control systems and devices across electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic domains.
- Performs preventive maintenance per schedule (coil cleaning, insulation and ductwork replacement, rust checks, belt and line checks, wiring integrity).
- Monitors system functioning and addresses potential problems.
- Ensures compliance with codes, ordinances, building and safety standards for HVAC activities.
- Maintains work orders, purchase orders, daily activity logs and data records for HVAC systems.
- Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles; adheres to safe operation practices.
- Responds to emergencies to confine, resolve, and prevent environmentally hazardous conditions.
- Keeps up to date on current technology used by OCPS; attends training to maintain required skill levels.
- Maintains timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.
Marginal Functions
These tasks are necessary for the work of the unit but are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may be performed by other unit members. Performed as directed.
Minimum Training and Experience
Vocational / technical training in heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation; supplemented by a minimum of 5 years of progressively knowledgeable and skilled trades work in large commercial or industrial institutions, with demonstrated equipment troubleshooting and diagnostic skills, and ability to read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams and technical specifications; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver's license class "D"; requires training in refrigerant handling and recovery. Effective August 24, 2009, all new hires must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); previous incumbents holding this position without a break in service are not required to have this screening.

Physical ability : tasks involve substantial physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting heavy objects (up to 100 pounds or more as needed). Sensory requirements include color, sound, and depth perception. Environmental factors include exposure to adverse conditions, machinery, noise, temperature, and hazardous agents.
