The 9th Judicial District City Courts is seeking an experienced and dedicated Principal Court Attorney . This is a unique opportunity to join a team that plays a pivotal role in the efficient operation of the judiciary while addressing complex legal matters. As a Principal Court Attorney, you will assist in the formulation and implementation of both administrative and substantive policy, while working closely with judges, court staff, and external agencies. The position may be eligible for 20% remote work as part of a pilot program : eligibility is at the discretion of the Court and its Law Department and may be subject to change based upon the needs of the court.

Key Responsibilities :

• Assign and oversee legal research tasks, evaluate completed work, and provide guidance to junior legal staff.
• Provide actionable suggestions to judges for improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of court proceedings.
• Write confidential legal memoranda, analyze complex legal issues, and recommend decisions.
• Respond to complaints and inquiries from various stakeholders, providing expert legal guidance as necessary.
• Arrange and conduct conferences with litigants and other parties to ensure the smooth progress of cases.
• Draft confidential opinions, decisions, orders, jury charges, and other legal correspondence as needed.
• Regularly meet with judges to discuss legal issues and provide counsel on pending cases.
• Knowledge and experience in city court practice preferred.

Qualifications : Admission to the New York State Bar; and Three (3) years of service in the Associate Court Attorney title; or Eight (8) years of relevant legal experience gained after admission to the New York State Bar.
