Job Summary

Supervises a small to medium sized operational unit of non-exempt employees. The functional activities are somewhat complex and have moderate impact on overall operations. This level supervises employees in clerical, administrative, trade, or technical functions that provide services to persons inside or outside the organization. The substance of the positions is non-routine and is semi-skilled or skilled in nature and has a direct impact on the work, office operations, projects, or programs of others in the organization. Supervises the daily operation of clerical / administrative or installation / maintenance crews. Work time will be spent performing the type of work supervised.

Job Description

The Supervisor-Forestry supervises, directs, assigns, and supports crews and workers performing forestry and related work activities for the City and its public works department.

Essential Functions

1. Delegates, assigns, and manages daily work assignments for crewmembers or other lower-level crew leaders; ensures work procedures are followed safely and efficiently and work is completed properly; provides training and performs work with crews.

2. Provides supervision and technical expertise as it pertains to tree maintenance and ensure trees are kept in tip top health for a better environment and safe for the public.

3. Works with crew leaders and sets the pace of work; provides on-site job and safety training and explains / demonstrates proper, safe and efficient work methods; ensures all plans, materials, tools, and supplies are available for crewmembers.

4. Turns in completed service requests from prior day to manager; determines plan for the day with manager and delegates work orders; documents the day and the events for records, fills out a Time Sheet and a summary of the day's operations and assignments.

5. Performs or leads preventative maintenance and minor repairs to equipment; checks for cleanliness of tools and equipment; assigns clean-up activities around the work site to leave premises clean and safe.

6. Drives and operates City trucks to transport workers, materials, and equipment to and from jobsite; trains employees on driving and operating heavy equipment safely and secures heavy equipment with chains or other ratcheting equipment.

7. Handles and responds to citizen complaints or concerns; facilitates prompt, timely, and efficient solutions; works with community partners and other departments to plant trees and other plants.

8. Perform all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

1. Knowledge of general Arboriculture methods and tree maintenance and care.

2. Knowledge of the use and care of hand and power tools, such as jackhammer, cement mixer, and power auger.

3. Knowledge of surface preparation and adaptability of various surface materials.

4. Knowledge of customer service and engagement.

5. Knowledge of safety standards and protocols.

6. Ability to receive and transmit to crewmembers oral and written instructions.

7. Ability to delegate, assign, and oversee workers and crews.

8. Ability to lead crewmembers in the performance of a variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods.

9. Ability to lift and work with heavy equipment.

10. Communicating effectively orally and in writing.

11. Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience : Five (5) years of experience in forest maintenance operations and one (1) year of lead work or supervisory responsibilities.

Licenses and Certifications : Valid Driver's License with good driving record. Arboriculture certification issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). (may be obtained within 6-month probationary period)

Education : High School Diploma or GED.

Equivalency : Arboriculture certification issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) plus two (2) years of the required experience and one (1) year of lead work or supervisory responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements.

Salary Range

$28.27 - $33.93

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
