Description
The City of Richmond Department of Justice Services is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Registered Nurse in the Juvenile Detention Center. The incumbent will be responsible for delivering a broad range of services, screening, assessments, medication delivery, treatment plans and patient education. This position is also responsible for collaborating with the Detention Center physician and performing other administrative tasks.

Assisting physicians with examinations
Scheduling appointments for detained residents for services outside the detention facility
Administering medications and accurately documents on Medical Administration Records (MAR)
Ordering medication and / or supplies as needed
Responding to written requests on communication request forms per standing orders and notify physician of problems not covered in standing orders
Preparing medical emergency incident reports
Accurately charting, documenting, and maintaining of resident's medical records
Copying of necessary medical records and completing transfer form when transferring residents to another facility
Ensuring parent and / or legal guardian(s) signature is obtained upon release from facility
Conducting monthly Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid kit checks
Performing tuberculosis risk assessment and administration of purified protein derivatives (PPD)
Accepting medication deliveries from pharmacies, parents, and / or legal guardians
Assisting with invoice billing regarding residents or products for residents
Supervising part-time and contracted Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or medication aides
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of Medicine / Nursing - information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. Considerable skills communicating information concerning patients clearly and concisely. Considerable experience operating medical equipment such as stethoscopes, medical handbooks / guides, blood pressure monitors, thermometers, pulse A oximeters, glucose readers, and medication carts. Considerable ability in following directions, functioning independently with minimal supervision and demonstrating professional behavior, positive attitude, and flexibility.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE :
Graduation from a state-approved accredited professional nursing program
At least one year of experience as a professional nurse within the last 3 years, or specialty certification with evidence of training, competency, and clinical expertise
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and / or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
CPR certification desirable
Certification as a Medication Administration Trainer and First Aid Instructor is required within a time-frame established by the City after initial hire
Preferred Qualifications :
Knowledge of general nursing and nursing methods
Interpersonal / human relations skills
Customer service skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to teach and have an understanding of maladjusted youth
Ability to work independently
