Airport Maintenance Technician

This position is responsible for maintaining the aesthetic appearance, safety, and operational functionality of all airport grounds, including the airfield, terminal landscapes, and other airport-owned properties. This role ensures compliance with FAA Part 139 standards and all applicable environmental and aviation regulations, supporting the safe and efficient operation of airport facilities while presenting a clean, professional, and well-maintained environment to the public and aviation partners.

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Maintain airfield turf at appropriate heights and perform FOD (Foreign Object Debris) checks on runways, taxiways, and aprons to ensure FAA safety compliance.
  • Mow, trim, and edge grass around terminals, parking lots, and other airport-owned properties to maintain clean and safe grounds.
  • Carry out landscaping duties, including planting, pruning, mulching, and irrigation system maintenance, to enhance the airport's appearance.
  • Remove trash and control litter across all airport properties to ensure cleanliness and appearance.
  • Operate heavy and medium equipment (e.g., tractors, zero-turn mowers, skid steers) for grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers in accordance with safety guidelines and environmental regulations.
  • Perform minor repairs on groundskeeping equipment and report major issues to the maintenance team to ensure continuous operation.
  • Maintain drainage systems and culverts to prevent water accumulation on airfields and airport grounds.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements :

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Requires up to two years of related experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
