Wildland Fire Mitigation Officer

Responsibilities include :
- Responsible for the planning, organizing and execution of fuel reduction and prescribed fire utilizing environmentally sound practices.
- Duties include the communication and coordination of these activities for County property as well as coordinating with Florida Forest Service, state land managers, and other County departments in the timing of conducting burns to preserve the integrity of fire suppression forces and maintenance of smoke corridor requirements.
- Duties include serving as Certified Prescribed Burn Manager or designating qualified Prescribed Burn Managers during County prescribed burning operations.
- Duties include working with Sarasota County Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources, Solid waste, Utilities, and other departments within Sarasota County Government in implementing ecological management plans.
- Responsible for the planning, timing, authorizing, and building of fire break zones, evaluation of burn sites as post burn monitoring.
- Coordinate with Sarasota County Communications during prescribed burns and mitigation efforts.
- Lead and supervise Sarasota County Prescribed Burn Team Members, direct personnel, and contractors assigned to mitigation programmatic efforts. Provide leadership, programmatic oversight, yearly competency training / education, and enhance continuity of team members.
- Create and manage yearly property mitigation plan encompassing prioritized properties and schedules to effectively mitigate fire potential in order of severity, risk, and availability.
- Oversee and manage database documentation program encompassing property mitigation efforts performed including potential timelines for continued future mitigation needs of managed property.
- Measures and considers impact to mitigation plans of severe weather events on managed properties.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening : This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
CJIS Clearance : The successful candidate will be subject to an extensive background check(s) as a part of the hiring process.
Work Hours : Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. - 5 : 00 p.m.
To thrive in this position, you must have :
Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection or related field and a minimum of two (2) years experience in Supervisory Wildland Firefighting / Mitigation.Minimum of six (6) years as a Certified Prescribed Burn Manager.Possession of the NWCG Wildland Firefighter Type II Certification along with the annual wildland firefighter arduous pack test completion.Possession of the Florida Prescribed Burn Manager Certification. Completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290) and Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations (S-390)Completion of ICS100-400 and NIMS 700 & 800.Must possess one of the following certifications : Florida Firefighter Minimum Standards Certification or Division of State Fire Marshal Florida Forestry Certificate of Compliance.Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations (S-390) Candidates must possess this or be able to obtain within 1-year of hire.Current and valid Florida driver's license. Candidate must possess this or be able to obtain it within 30 days of hire.Six years of professional job-related experience can be substituted on a year-for-year basis at management discretion for the required education.Starting Pay Range : $55,577.60 - $60,008.00 based on experience.
