JOB SUMMARY :
The role of Perinatal LVN / Clerk will perform a variety of clinical and unit based clerical duties. Clerical duties may include the preparation, maintenance, and processing of patient records, relaying messages and patient requests to appropriate personnel, greeting and assisting patients and visitors, assisting in enforcement of visiting regulations, stocking and maintenance of supplies, and other related duties as assigned by the Perinatal Nurse Manager. LVN duties will include assisting the Perinatal Registered Nurse in delivering appropriate, comprehensive care to stable couplets, well babies, and / or patients in the postpartum period, in accordance with nursing standards, scope of practice and professional code of ethics.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS :
- Reports directly to Perinatal Nurse Manager
- Reports indirectly to Director of Inpatient Services.
- Reports indirectly to the House Supervisor and other management covering the department.
- Takes daily direction from the Perinatal Nurses and Perinatal Nurse Manager.
- Collaborates with all members of the Health Care Team in the coordination of patient care.
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS :
This position includes tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.

The Perinatal LVN / Clerk delivers indirect and direct care in a manner that preserves / protects patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.Delivers both direct and indirect patient care, under the supervision of the Perinatal Unit RN’s, in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity and age.Establishes a good rapport with patients, families and visitors, respecting patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality of information.The Clerk / LVN meets the health care needs of patients within the framework of the nursing process and consistent with his / her level of practice.Demonstrates knowledge of the principles and skills necessary to communicate with Perinatal patients, their families, visitors, and others. Completes unit based competency relating to growth and development annually.Assembles, maintains, and disassembles the patient’s medical record following established policy and procedure.Maintains supplies : central service, stock supplies, laundry, etc. Orders and maintains patient educational materials and discharge packsInitiates and assembles appropriate forms from charts for patients being transferred to another facility.Enters patient charges daily, and ensures completeness and accuracy of the nurse’s charges (correct documentation and orders to support charges), and communicates to nurses if missing information supporting the charges.Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge of patientsTake a postpartum Mom / Baby couplet assignment, under supervision of RN, as needed.Attend deliveries as needed, administer postpartum medication to patient when needed.Administer baby meds (i.e. Vitamin K, Erythromycin, Vitamin D, Hepatitis vaccine)Start IV’s for patients as neededParticipates in implementation of the plan of care.Has a RN sign off and validate their patient care at the end of the shift.The LVN / Clerk participates in maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors, other staff, and self.The LVN / Clerk demonstrates effective interpersonal skills when communicating with health care consumers to include patients, families, personnel and the general publicThe LVN / Clerk supports the philosophy and goals of the hospital, the nursing department and the unit.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Experience :
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to instruct / comfort patients / families; to maintain effective communication / contact with healthcare team membersAnalytical skills necessary in order to prioritize workload and prepare nursing care plans, implement effective nursing care and develop solutions to problems concerning patient’s body, mind, and spiritBasic computer knowledge including : Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word and IntranetAbility to learn Computer software programs applicable to patient care and operations process.Must be able to understand, read, and write English clearlyEducation :
High school diploma or GED certificateSuccessful completion of a Licensed Vocational Nursing Program and current California LVN license.Certification :
BLS within one month of hire and on-goingNRP within three months of hire.IV certificationPreferred : Experience :
Previous hospital clerical experience or medical terminology courseSome weekends and Holidays required
