NC Mountains Freshwater Recovery Director

The NC Mountains Freshwater Recovery Director will build and oversee a team of four and a budget of over $3 million / year to deliver freshwater projects in collaboration with the US Forest Service on recovery from Hurricane Helene. Their work will be focused on delivering on a freshwater scope of work under a 10-year Hurricane Helene Disaster Recovery award with the US Forest Service. They will build and lead a small team of professional freshwater restoration specialists and seasonal technicians. They will manage with excellence two direct reports and will be responsible for performance management, training, and career development. The NC Mountain Freshwater Recovery Director will work closely with the US Forest Service in TNC priority watersheds to prioritize freshwater projects, troubleshoot implementation challenges, and deliver results while maintaining relationships with local partners. In this 10-year term position they will sequence implementation projects across the North Carolina mountains to create a steady pipeline. They will have administrative oversight over delivering on the freshwater scope of work and will complete required grant reporting.

Projects will be focused on improving Helene-impacted watersheds through aquatic and wetland restoration, including dam removals, undersized culvert replacements, instream habitat improvements, streambank stability enhancements, sediment abatement BMPs, and riparian restoration. The NC Mountains Freshwater Recovery Director will also have technical skills to add to our team, and will support and aid in implementation as needed, and will collaborate with the TNC terrestrial Helene recovery team to leverage internal efforts. TNC's goals for freshwater work in this region are to increase the resilience and connectivity of mountain streams, conserve and increase the quality of aquatic habitat critical to the amazing biodiversity in the Southern Appalachians, and to increase the resilience of downstream human communities to climate change impacts including flooding. The projects will be carried out in close collaboration with partners including the US Forest Service as well as other state, non-profit, and tribal partners.

The NC Mountains Freshwater Recovery Director will report to the Southern Blue Ridge Program Director with guidance and direct connection to the NC Director of Freshwater and Coastal Programs. They will have support from the S. Apps Freshwater Director and NC Chapter science staff. They will work closely with a robust team of freshwater practitioners in Asheville and others working across the seven state Southern Appalachian area, and particularly closely with Virginia colleagues.

They may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. The NC Mountain Freshwater Recovery Director will be asked to interact with donors as appropriate, which sometimes will include working on evenings and weekends. The position is based out of TNC's office in Asheville with hybrid work options considered. It is a full-time, grant funded, ten-year term position without renewal.

What You'll Bring :

• BA / BS degree and 5 years' experience in natural resource management, including freshwater ecology or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
• Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance of professional employees.
• Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and government agencies.
• Demonstrated negotiating skills and experience.
• Must have valid Driver's License and be willing to travel to project sites.
• Experience performing physical work outdoors in all conditions.
• Experience using Microsoft Office; Outlook, Word, Excel, GPS and ArcGIS and / or similar applications.

Desired Qualifications

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program . Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned / leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Salary Information :

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $77,000 - $85,000 annually. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
