USA TODAY is seeking an audience editor who is eager to join a fast-paced, 24 / 7 newsroom and deliver content to readers in unexpected ways. This editor will be part of USA TODAY’s audience team, working on digital, mobile, and social platforms. The candidate must be a self-starter, demonstrate strong news judgment, have prior digital news experience, and a background in social media and building audiences.

This audience editor will lead USA TODAY’s response to news and deliver it across all of our digital platforms. They will specialize in finding a wide audience for USA TODAY’s stories, photos, videos, graphics, and other content, and optimize them for different social and digital platforms. This editor will also identify and publish pertinent wire articles or content from across the USA TODAY Network. Depending on the candidate's background, they could also write breaking news stories or create original social graphics.

We are looking for three (3) remote audience editors :

  • Weekend audience editors (x2) who will manage core audience platforms 5 days a week – including Saturdays and Sundays.
  • One evening audience editor (x1) who will promote content across social, alerts, home front, and more in the evenings. This role may include weekend work.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Be a proactive self-starter with excellent time management skills.
  • Have a strong interest in what audiences care about and the tools used to discover trends.
  • Manage coverage in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations with sound news judgment.
  • Be an eagle-eyed copy editor with a background in editing and writing.
  • Meet deadlines and prioritize competing demands.
  • Have a passion for audience growth, social media, and finding new ways to reach readers.
  • Participate in news meetings to stay informed about coverage plans and major projects.
  • Work on weekends and nights as part of a 24 / 7 newsroom.
  • Requirements :

  • At least two years of experience working in a newsroom
  • Experience working on an audience or social team for a daily news organization
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Experience curating news homepages
  • Top-notch writing and headline-writing skills
  • Understanding of search engine optimization
  • Prior reporting and writing experience not required, but preferred
  • Ability to edit and produce digital content packages
  • An understanding of metrics for digital and social environments

    The annualized base salary for this role will range between $55,000.00 and $64,000.00. Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
