Perform duties in the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center of the Tooele County Sheriff's Office. This includes technical duties such as responding to calls, requesting public safety assistance, and dispatching appropriate aid. This is a full-time job that requires shift work. The purpose of this job is to provide dispatching services to single and / or multiple jurisdictions which includes but is not limited to state and local public safety agencies, Highway Patrol, local law enforcement agencies, fire departments and other state agencies. Incumbents receive calls for one or a combination of emergency police, fire, and medical services, and dispatch the appropriate personnel and equipment in response to the calls. In response to emergency calls, incumbents make urgent decisions affecting the life, health, and welfare of the public and public safety employees. Incumbents are required to be POST Certified at time of hire and maintain required certifications to include Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification and maintain them. Oversees and coordinates the activities of junior dispatch personnel.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work under direct supervision from the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, and Dispatch Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervise Dispatcher, Dispatcher II, and Dispatcher III personnel.
Supervise the day-to-day operation of the assigned shift.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Ability to plan, assign, monitor, and review the work of subordinates.
Maintain a schedule for assigned shift.
Be available 24 hours a day on-call to fill in during emergencies.
Submit employee time sheets and assist with record keeping.
Maintain organized dispatch area and ensure all communication systems function properly.
Advise the Dispatch Manager of any known equipment malfunctions or repairs needed.
Attend Dispatch Supervisor meetings.
Serve as a liaison between the Tooele County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center and members of the Sheriff's Office to maintain an effective working relationship.
Perform event review, random call review, and complaint / inquiry quality assurance checks.
Complete end-of-crew reviews, evaluate employee performance, and document recognition or disciplinary actions using appropriate SIR forms.
Receive in-coming radio, emergency, and non-emergency telephone calls; evaluate each situation to determine proper authority to dispatch.
Monitor all radio channels to ensure adequate assistance is provided for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel.
Operate Utah Criminal Justice Information System (UCJIS) computer terminal to obtain vehicle registration, driver license information, want checks, etc. Send teletypes to obtain needed information.
Operate Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to dispatch law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel. Assign case numbers and maintain unit status.
Must be able to perform as a credible witness in a court of law.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :
Must have advanced knowledge of radio communication techniques and demonstrate a master-level understanding of computers and software applications. A thorough knowledge of Tooele County geography is required, along with the ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing-especially in high-pressure or emergency situations. The candidate must be able to read, understand, teach, and apply detailed procedures, laws, and policies during periods of stress or high activity, while maintaining accurate records and organizational productivity. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, including the ability to work effectively with coworkers, other agencies, and the public. The candidate must consistently project a professional image, uphold high ethical standards, maintain confidentiality, and promote the same among subordinates.
Additional requirements include maintaining certifications in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD), POST Dispatch, and UCJIS. The candidate must comply with and help enforce all policies and procedures of Tooele County, the Sheriff's Office, and the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center. A valid Utah driver's license and a safe driving record are required, as well as the ability to pass all background and security checks. Ongoing training of at least 20 hours annually is mandatory. The position also requires flexibility to work odd hours, be on-call, and cover shifts on short notice.
Applicants for the position will be rated as follows : 30% for written examination, 40% for an interview, 20% for work evaluation, and 10% for seniority.
