Job Description

Job Description

THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY FOUNDATION

“Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.” -Theodore Roosevelt

Since 2014, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation (TRPLF) has been planning and building a new, ambitious kind of presidential library and museum. Other presidential libraries tell the story of a single individual, but the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) – being built more than a century after T.R.’s death – will do more than preserve history. The TRPL will be a people’s library, bringing Roosevelt’s values and relentless spirit to life at a critical time in our nation and world, while simultaneously championing the stories of all who “dare greatly, think boldly, care deeply, and live passionately.”

The library is currently being constructed in Medora, North Dakota, with a milestone planned for July 4, 2026 – America’s 250th anniversary. Participants at the TRPL will learn from – not just about – Roosevelt’s story, being transformed into the same stunning Badlands that served as the fulcrum in T.R.’s incredible life story.

Guided by the pillar principles of leadership, citizenship, and conservation, the Foundation has partnered with innovative partners – like the award-winning architecture firm, Snøhetta, and the best-in-class story crafters, the Future of Storytelling – to build an institution like no other. With plans to be the most sustainable presidential library and campus ever, a revolutionary approach to interpretive design, and programming that will spread the library’s message into neighboring Theodore Roosevelt National Park and beyond across the globe, the opportunity to join a talented team in building and opening this institution is truly unique.

About the Role

The Grounds and Land Manager is responsible for the care, stewardship, and ongoing enhancement of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library’s outdoor spaces in alignment with our commitment to environmental excellence. This role will lead land management operations, oversee a team of grounds staff, and maintain the health, safety, and beauty of our landscapes, facilities, and equipment. The position requires specialized knowledge, or a passionate interest, in sustainable practices, native prairie restoration, land management, and regenerative landscaping to support the project’s goals for LEED Platinum, SITES Platinum and Living Building Challenge (LBC) – Full Living Certification. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, Grounds, and Sustainability, this is a rare opportunity to shape and preserve a campus that reflects Theodore Roosevelt's values in both spirit and soil.

Core Competencies

  • Experience or strong interest in native prairie plants, ecological restoration, and land management.
  • Basic knowledge of low-emissions equipment and eco-friendly materials; willingness to learn and adopt new methods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to follow directions and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

Sustainable Land Management & Native Prairie Restoration

  • Plan, implement, and monitor native prairie restoration and enhancement projects.
  • Manage regenerative landscaping practices, including soil health improvement, integrated pest management, and invasive species control.
  • Ensure all practices align with certification requirements for LEED, SITES and LBC.
  • General Groundskeeping & Maintenance

  • Maintain outdoor elements including green roof, lawns, gardens, walking paths, signage, and outdoor furnishings.
  • Oversee snow removal operations to ensure safe access to all walkways, drives, and parking areas.
  • Monitor and maintain parking areas, drainage systems, and outdoor lighting for safety and functionality.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair landscaping tools, heavy equipment, and utility vehicles.
  • Leadership & Staff Oversight

  • Supervise groundskeeping staff, seasonal workers, and contractors.
  • Develop work schedules, assign tasks, and ensure high-quality standards.
  • Provide training on sustainable land management practices, equipment uses, and safety procedures.
  • Monitor performance and provide feedback to support professional growth.
  • Sustainability & Certification Compliance

  • Track and document land management practices in accordance with LEED, SITES and LBC requirements.
  • Collaborate with sustainability and facilities teams to align daily operations with project goals.
  • Participate in site audits, inspections, and reporting to support certification achievements and renewals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Education and Experience

  • 5+ years of groundskeeping or land management experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in horticulture, environmental science, landscape management, or related field, preferred.
  • Proven experience in native prairie restoration, sustainable landscaping, or ecological land stewardship.
  • Strong understanding of LEED, SITES and Living Building Challenge principles (or willingness to learn).
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining grounds equipment, including side-by-sides, skid steers, and snow removal machinery.
  • Ability to manage schedules and project timelines.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to environmental stewardship and regenerative practices.
  • Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • The ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Operate groundskeeping equipment and perform tasks such as bending, kneeling, and walking over uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme summer and winter temperatures. Outdoor work is required year-round in varying weather conditions including heat, rain, and snow.
  • Occasional early morning, evening, weekend, or holiday work; especially during snow events or special programs.
  • PPE such as gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and appropriate footwear must be worn as required. The TRPL provides the necessary PPE, and employees are expected to use it in accordance with safety protocols.
  • This is a full-time, exempt position working onsite at the TRPL in Medora, ND.
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance of Medora, ND (less than an hour's drive or within 60 miles).
  • Benefits

Full benefits include 403(b), medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, as well as 20 days of paid time off and 10 days of holidays. The annual salary ranges between $50,000 to $70,000 commensurate with experience.
