GENERAL SUMMARY : \n\n

This role provides an opportunity to complete a structured surgical technologist training program while gaining hands-on, on-the-job experience to develop industry-specific skills. Works directly with an assigned preceptor to develop the specific skills required to ensure operative procedures are conducted efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with all policies and protocols. Upon successful completion of the training program, the apprentice will be eligible for a position as a Surgical Technologist. This position functions under the supervision of an instructor and preceptor, and reports to Continuing Education management.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

7. Under the direction of a preceptor, prepares the operating room and instruments for surgical procedures.
\n\n
8. Ensures the operating room and surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization criteria.
\n\n
9. Maintains sterile field and safe environment.
\n\n
10. Assists the surgical team during the procedure, within the scope of practice.
\n\n
11. After procedure, cleans room and prepares for next procedure in compliance with established protocol.
\n\n
12. Consistently maintains good rapport and a positive demeanor with colleagues and customers.
\n\n
13. Attends scheduled departmental training, completes required training, and testing in a timely manner.
\n\n
14. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
\n\n
\n\n
1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patients growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.
\n\n
2. Knowledge of standard and transmission-based precautions.
\n\n
3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
\n\n
4. Ability to practice proper body mechanics to ensure personal and patient safety.
\n\n
5. Ability to perform accurate sponge, sharp and instrument counts.
\n\n
6. Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
\n\n
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, education team, and medical staff.
\n\n
8. Ability to consistently adhere to organizational and departmental safety and infection control procedures.
\n\n
9. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.
\n\n
10. Ability to effectively perform work under stressful and in emergent situations.
\n\n
11. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
\n\n

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
\n\n
\n\n
Minimum of 1 (one) year of employment at Bryan Health required. Experience in sterile processing or procedural department preferred. High school diploma or equivalency required. Enrollment in the surgical technologist program required. Must remain in good standing throughout coursework for the surgical technologist program. Candidates must speak, read, and write in English.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS :
\n\n
\n\n
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
