The Oregon Department of Corrections is currently recruiting for a Facility Maintenance Specialist. This exciting employment opportunity is with the Oregon Department of Corrections at the Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP) in Salem, Oregon.

This position is represented by Association of Oregon Corrections Employees (AOCE). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

About the Job Your Role

The Facility Maintenance Specialist assists the Physical Plant Manager in managing the maintenance program at the Oregon State Penitentiary and is expected to model pro-social behaviors, reinforce positive behaviors, redirect negative behaviors, and effectively communicate observations to program staff and supervisors in support of OAM. Responsibilities include custodial duties such as handling adults in custody (AIC) incidents, preventing escapes through control of keys, tools, and contraband, assisting DOC with supervising AIC workers, conducting searches as needed, and potentially using physical restraints when managing hostile AICs. The Specialist directs, instructs, and supervises AIC work crews performing a variety of building trades tasks for repair and maintenance, completes repairs and preventative maintenance, including work orders and CMMS scheduled tasks and supports other trade staff when necessary. Additional duties include requesting supplies and parts, maintaining material and equipment inventories, assisting with project planning and cost estimates, maintaining tool inventories, training AIC workers in tool and equipment use, interviewing and recommending AIC hires, conducting searches to prevent contraband, monitoring work areas for safety and cleanliness, and writing disciplinary reports following proper procedures. The Specialist may also perform tasks in carpentry, general maintenance, lock repair, welding, painting, and plumbing as assigned by supervisors, with technical guidance provided as needed. This role requires adherence to cultural competency and diversity principles and does not encompass every possible duty assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Your application materials will be reviewed to verify that you have :

• Two (2) years of : a) general building maintenance; b) carpentry; c) electrical; d) mechanical; e) painting; or f) plastering experience.

A journeyman's license / card in any of the above trades will substitute for this experience. Be sure a copy of your journeyman's license / card is attached to your application form.

NOTE : At the time of recruitment, agencies will specify if the position requires a specialty in a) through f) above. Some positions in this class may require the possession of a valid Oregon driver's license valid for the class of vehicles used by the employing agencies. Agencies will note this requirement at the time of recruitment. Positions assigned Electrical duties require a Limited Maintenance Electrical license. Working Conditions

This position is located inside the Oregon State Penitentiary and works in close contact with adults in custody in the institution setting and may be exposed to hostile situations or incidents. Inherent custodial duties include the responsibility for personally handling AIC incidents in the employee's immediate work area. The employee is responsible to prevent escapes from confinement by proper control of keys, tools, and contraband and documenting unusual incidents as they occur. The employee is subject to call back in the event of an emergency at which time he / she would be placed in any post in the institution.
