Head Of Private Credit

Securian Asset Management is seeking an accomplished investment leader to join our organization as Head Of Private Credit. This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to shape and drive the strategic growth of our Private Credit platform within a global, $33 billion-dollar insurance-based asset management business. The Head Of Private Credit will lead a high-performing team, oversee all aspects of private placement activity, and serve as the principal voice of this asset class across the enterprise.

This is a pivotal leadership role for a seasoned professional with deep expertise in private placements, direct deals, and credit underwriting who thrives in balancing investment rigor with client partnership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investment Leadership : Direct the day-to-day activities of the Private Credit team, overseeing underwriting, execution, and evaluation of investment opportunities across a wide range of industries.
  • Portfolio Oversight : Provide review and strategic oversight of existing holdings, focusing on covenant quality, credit structures, and investor protections to safeguard client portfolios.
  • Deal Origination & Execution : Lead direct and club deals, engaging directly with issuers and sponsors. Champion timely, well-reasoned investment recommendations for review by investment committees, portfolio managers, and clients.
  • Strategic Growth & Market Presence : Assess opportunities in the U.S. market, drive brand visibility, and expand market share. Represent the Private Credit team externally and internally as its thought leader and advocate.
  • Team Leadership : Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of private credit professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Stakeholder Partnership : Partner closely with internal and external counsel, marketing, compliance, operations, and distribution teams to ensure disciplined execution and seamless integration of private credit strategies across the firm.
  • Client Engagement : Act as a trusted partner to both internal and external clients, ensuring clear communication, aligned expectations, and delivery of high-value solutions.

Qualifications :

  • Private Placements / Private Credit Experience : 7+ years of experience investing in private placements / private credit on behalf of insurance company portfolios. (May have additional overall experience in public credit investing).
  • International and Domestic Issuers : Experience investing in both domestic and international issuers (USD denominated deals) specifically Europe and Australia (and to a lesser degree Asia).
  • Transaction Sizes : Experience working with average transaction sizes of $50 million to $100 million (with aggregate deal size at $500 million) and comfort with an average rating of BBB.
  • Leadership / Management experience : Prior experience leading, mentoring and managing other investment professionals is essential.
  • Bachelor's degree : (MBA / CFA highly preferred / expected).

  • The estimated base pay range for this job is : $172,700.00 - $358,600.00. Pay may vary depending on job-related factors and individual experience, skills, knowledge, etc. More information on base pay and incentive pay (if applicable) can be discussed with a member of the Securian Financial Talent Acquisition team.
