job_description.job_card.job_descriptionApprehend, arrest and / or cite individuals who violate statute, law, or code. Monitor motorist compliance with traffic laws and take appropriate enforcement actions when necessary. Operate a law enforcement vehicle during both day and night; in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow. Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting law enforcement patrol vehicles; lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling up oneself over obstacles; climbing through openings; jumping over surfaces and using body force to gain entrance through barriers. Collect evidence and substances. Load, unload, aim and fire from a variety of body positions department issued firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards. Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, detaining people and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons. Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time. Engage in law enforcement patrol functions that include such things as working rotating shifts, walking on foot and bicycle patrols, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure. Process and transport prisoners and mental patients using appropriate restraints. Extinguish small fires by using a fire extinguisher or other means. Process arrested suspects. Operate various speed detection devices. Non-essential Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations, affidavits, complaints and warrants. Perform criminal investigations. Operate various office machines and computer related applications in office and motor vehicle such as data entry, work processing, computer aided dispatch and other software programs which may be introduced into the department's operations. Monitor persons taken into custody. Maintain a professional appearance and conduct while representing the department. Obey all policies and directives. Obey direct orders of the Chief of Police, his designee, a superior officer, or any Police Department member relaying the order of a superior. Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police. Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification or the ability to obtain Law Enforcement Standards Board certification. Associate Degree, Bachelor's degree preferred Wisconsin Driver License Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws or codes pertaining to arrest, search and seizure; applicable safety requirements; federal, state and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility; and professional standards and regulations. Skills and knowledge in use of firearms, handcuffs, baton, OC Spray, Conducted Energy Weapons, emergency vehicle operation, basic first aid, communicable diseases, defensive arrest tactics, use of intoximeter, and operation of radar devices; using computer applications including spreadsheet, database and word processing software; negotiation and facilitation; and mediation and dispute resolution. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form; diffuse and respond effectively to situations involving intense pressures and / or unpredictable persons; handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure; effectively handle difficult and / or angry people; exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions; think critically; process information logically; react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; and respond quickly to emergencies; interact with the public, other law enforcement officers, outside agency representatives, etc. in an effective, fair, and professional manner; work independently and as part of a team; be empathic and de-escalate situations; be mentally tough to deal with stress and trauma associated with police work; be patient with difficult persons and difficult situations; uphold the law and protect the public without bias or prejudice; perform the responsibilities of a Police Officer with honesty and integrity; effect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense. While working, you will or may encounter the following : climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, fine motor skills, and repetitive motion. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as : preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and / or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and / or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes and environmental conditions, such as temperature, weather, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

Hours of Work
Standard hours will be assigned by early, mid or late shift, generally 8.5 hours a day, working four connective days and then off two consecutive days. Scheduled hours may vary, and position should be available for overtime when the need arises after standard scheduled hours of work.
