Electrician I

This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health Crafts - Farrow, 7901 Farrow Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.

The Office of Mental Health's mission is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. We provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

Under general to no supervision, you will perform trades related duties of considerable difficulty, requiring a high degree of skill and technical knowledge in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and fire alarm equipment within safe parameters on BHDD OMH.

Responsibilities for the Electrician I :

  • Perform installation, maintenance, and repairs of basic electrical systems and equipment in safe conditions for BHDD facilities.
  • Coordinate vendor contractors for inspections of fire alarm systems and fire sprinkler systems for BHDD facilities.
  • Assist Building Manager in maintaining vital records of electrical and fire alarm testing and inspections of BHDD facilities for compliance and accreditation purposes.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment as well as electrical / fire alarm panel rooms in BHDD facilities.
  • Signs up to rotate "on call" for evenings, weekends and / or holidays with other employees to equitably distribute coverage for electrical shop.
  • Use the BHDD work order system as instructed, enter work orders and ensure prompt and reliable repair turnaround times.
  • Maintain mileage sheets and gas purchases for assigned BHDD vehicle. Adhere to vehicle maintenance policies.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and experience in the construction or repair of secondary electrical systems. Relevant experience may be substituted for the required diploma on a year-for-year basis.

Valid driver's license and a 2-year clean driving record.

Additional Requirements

Five years on the job experience an electrical field. License or certifications in electrical or related areas of trade can be substituted for on the job experience.

Work environments will include basements, attics, occupied facilities, and outdoors.

Ability to follow and maintain a routine of safety practices and standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with generators, fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
  • Additional Comments

    Post hire, employees must have : Knowledge of use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the electrical trade.

    Knowledge of basic math units of measure.

    Knowledge of the standard practices and methods of pipe bending, wire pulling, and electrical troubleshooting.

    Ability to interpret prints, sketches, and follow oral and written instructions.

    Ability to stand, walk, squat, and crawl unassisted.

    Ability to carry and climb a ladder unassisted.
