Job Summary

HEAD COACH

The coach, as a member of the profession, has obligations and responsibilities to that sport in which he / she is involved. A list of duties is as follows :

Impress upon the athlete that he / she is first a student and encourage a higher standard than just eligible.

Emphasize that the main concern of this sport is to contribute to the total school program and environment.

Provides a program that instills as many positive character traits as possible (e.g., leadership, fair play, goal achievement and sportsmanship).

Assists the athletic director, when requested, with tournaments, scheduling, game set-up and management.

Provides the athletic director with information pertaining to the program, scores, site changes, disciplinary actions, rosters, roster changes, various problems, season results and any other directed requests.

Develops a plan for budget and overall program development (example : a 5 year plan for equipment and supplies).

Maintains up-to-date inventory of uniforms, equipment and supplies.

Assists with upkeep and use of the training room and its supplies.

Checks with the Athletic Director’s office on the vital forms necessary for each athlete before allowing them to practice.

Assumes supervision of the locker room and facility until team members leave school grounds.

Inspects facilities and equipment daily for safety precautions (example : football field is clear of foreign objects, gym floor is swept, etc.).

Submits accident reports to the nurse.

Assists deserving athletes in the search for scholarships. Seeks aid from counselor, principal, and athletic director in extremely gifted situations.

High School Head Coach-Insist recruiters see the principal or athletic director before allowing students to visit. Class time cannot be used for this.

Assists in the arranging of a balanced system of lettering for their sport.

Sees that team members are well-groomed and properly attired. The coach will role model this action.

Promotes middle school activities by occasionally attending contests and talking with middle school coaches and athletes.

Supervises assistant coaches and offers guidance when necessary.

Includes assistants in major program development and encourages their input.

Is open to attending workshops and clinics when it can fit the schedule.

Attends other school events whenever possible.

Assists periodically in development of a complete athletic program by promoting students to be involved in other sports and activities.

Will not hinder the student’s desire to pursue academic or other extra curricular activities   except when in direct conflict with the welfare of the team. (Example : play practice or game practice? Act or tournament?)

Read and familiarize themselves with the CHSAA Handbook.

Accept other duties as assigned by the principal or athletic director.

ASSISTANT COACH

The assistant coach in any sport will perform the same duties as the head coach or those duties as assigned by the head coach.

In JV programs, the coach will play as many individuals as situations will allow in order to prepare them for the highly competitive varsity environment. Therefore, the JV coach must seek the fine line between staying competitive while allowing as many as possible to play.

In C-tem programs the coach will see to it that playing time is distributed to everyone on the squad, unless there is a discrepancy in the student=s behavior or willingness to work hard.
