    Position Summary

    Columbia's Center for Teaching & Learning is now accepting applications for an Assistant Director in its Graduate Student Programs and Services group. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) partners with faculty, students, and colleagues across the University to support excellence and innovation in teaching and learning. The CTL is committed to advancing the culture of teaching and learning at Columbia through all of its programs, services, and resources.

    Reporting to the Director, Graduate Student Programs and Services, the Assistant Director will support professional development and improve the effectiveness of Teaching Assistants, Teaching Fellows, other graduate student instructors at Columbia, and postdocs by providing pedagogical programs, consultations, and resources.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide professional development in pedagogy and effective communication practices for Teaching Fellows, Teaching Assistants, and other graduate student instructors at Columbia University.
    • Establish working relationships with these populations through the design and implementation of teaching development orientations, institutes, workshops, and other programming informed by the scholarship of teaching and learning.
    • Manage fellowship programs, learning communities, and other cohort-building experiences centered in the CTL.
    • Design teaching development workshops and disseminate instructional resources to deliver in a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts. Highlight pedagogical methods appropriate to a diverse student body.
    • Support curricula tailored to graduate students for seminars and certificate programs in teaching and learning, as well as online materials such as teaching guides, blog and other social media posts, and case studies.
    • Collaborate on faculty development programs as appropriate.
    • Conduct consultations for graduate students in academic career development, teaching statements and portfolios, and grant / fellowship applications related to teaching and learning.
    • Provide support in the areas of course design, instructional design and delivery customized to the varying needs of academic disciplines and schools at Columbia.
    • Stay abreast of research, trends, and innovations in teaching and learning as applied to classroom and online learning environments.
    • Consult and collaborate with learning designers and CTL communications staff on projects and initiatives that integrate best pedagogical practices and emerging technologies.
    • Contribute to strategic planning for the Center for Teaching and Learning, cultivate partnerships on campus to identify new needs and opportunities for teaching support, identify best practices and resources available beyond Columbia and applicable to the work of the CTL, and help represent the CTL's work at briefings, campus visits, conferences, and other academic venues.
    • Working closely with the Associate Director of Assessment and Evaluation, conduct ongoing assessment of programs and services.
    • Analyze workshop activity, surveys, captured footage, and other evidence of impact, and draw on such data for iterative improvement of CTL programs and services.
    • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree and / or equivalent experience required.
    • 3 to 5 years directly related experience required.
    • University teaching experience and well-developed teaching, research, and assessment skills.
    • Current knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in teaching and learning.
    • Experience in applying research to curricular innovations and professional development in teaching and learning.
    • Strong communication skills and service-oriented approach to individuals at all levels and across disciplines.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, academic units, faculty, graduate students, and staff.
    • Excellent organizational, analytical, and program development skills.
    • Ability to juggle multiple assignments and provide high quality, timely support.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the academic environment.
    • Preferred Qualifications

    • Advanced degree in academic discipline or Instructional Design.
    • Demonstrated accomplishment supporting the development of inclusive teaching practices.
    • Experience delivering and / or supporting STEM instruction in higher education.
