Howard County Government Administrative Support Position

The position provides direct support to the County Solicitor by planning, coordinating and executing a number of projects simultaneously. This position serves in a confidential capacity within the definition of Howard County labor relations law and is ineligible for membership in a collective bargaining unit. The role involves performing senior technical level administrative support work, which may include supervisory responsibility, under general supervision from an administrative or technical superior. Work typically involves administrative, technical and para-legal work providing staff assistance to various Boards; or administrative secretarial or constituent services work assisting the County Executive, the State's Attorney, the Chief Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, Chief of Staff or the Chief Administrative Officer.
The job requires performing highly responsible secretarial and para-professional duties, gathering information from various sources to assist County Solicitor to generate various reports, making initial contact with all visitors to the office; arranging appointments and pre-trial conferences with attorneys and the general public, organizing and maintaining office routines and operations, processing confidential personnel related information for Howard County Government, preparing and maintaining County Solicitor's daily calendar for conferences and meetings, scheduling and assisting in the preparation of agendas of conferences and meetings of the County Solicitor and / or other attorneys in the Office of Law, preparing and processing financial documents such as expense claims, direct payment claims, and procurement card payments for all Staff Services, reviewing and routing contracts / agreements to the appropriate parties, reviewing mail and correspondence and tracking items requiring necessary action, answering inquiries regarding department functions, status of operations, existing policies and related matters, and typing a variety of correspondence including memorandum, forms and minutes.
The position requires a Bachelor's degree and one (1) related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred education, knowledge, skills, and abilities include thorough knowledge of business English and arithmetic and of office practices, procedures, and equipment, knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and equipment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational skills, strong analytical skills, proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc., ability to work well under pressure and meet competing time demands, ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team, and ability to communicate, cooperate, and work well with a wide variety of individuals.
