Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students.

CDU offers the only historically black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi, and is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods.

The instructor has the primary responsibility of organizing learning experiences in the nursing skills lab on campus. This position involves collaboration with all nursing and faculty that teach courses requiring practice in the skills lab.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Implement the skills laboratory curriculum. This includes the use of a variety of patient care equipment and supplies, and use of computer-based instruction tools and programs.
  • D develop clinical activity days such as medication / boot camps with lead faculty.
  • Monitor and maintain confidential lab student records. Track student hours, number of sessions and notes on lab activities and performance.
  • Set up all skills labs, practice sessions, and on-campus labs offered in all nursing courses.
  • Schedule and oversee guided practice sessions for nursing students during scheduled lab activities and open practice periods, supporting skill development according to course objectives, and inform nursing faculty of students' laboratory performance.
  • Schedule and oversee clinical remediation with prelicensure nursing students according to course objectives and inform nursing faculty of students' laboratory performance.
  • Facilitate simulation activities in the Nursing Simulation Lab with low and high-fidelity manikins.
  • Remain current in the areas of standard precautions. Ensure that safety requirements are in place and faculty and students follow safe procedures.
  • Provide instruction relating to the use of laboratory equipment and nursing practice and procedures.
  • Ensure the availability of properly functioning equipment and supplies .
  • Instruction may involve daytime, evening, and weekend labs as well as development of labs for delivery using distance education teaching and other informatics learning technologies. Work hours per week and schedule may vary depending upon student, lab, and clinical lab needs.
  • Monitor inventory of all laboratory supplies and equipment in the skills lab.
  • Assess laboratory space to ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee laboratory maintenance, safety, and handling of hazardous waste.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly maintained and functioning in relation to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social or educational backgrounds.
  • Process requests for nursing instructional equipment and materials necessary for the skills laboratory in conjunction with nursing faculty, skills tech and the Assistant Director of Simulation.
  • Lift manikins and equipment.

  • Qualifications / Requirements :

    EDUCATION :

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
  • Current California Registered Nurse licensure
  • EXPERIENCE :

  • One year experience in a Nursing Skills Laboratory
  • Minimum three to five years teaching experience.
  • Qualified through academic preparation and experience
  • Knowledge of curriculum design, outcomes
  • Experience working with faculty or administrators relative to students’ needs
  • Experience assisting Program Managers and other key subject-area faculty and administrators with functional area demands
  • Experience with human patient simulators, audiovisuals, or telemedicine.
  • KNOWLEDGE / ABILITY / SKILLS :

  • Prior employment in a medical hospital or lab
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without accommodation
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.
  • COMPLEXITY :

  • The ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention and care while providing / obtaining information on numerous inquiries is paramount to success in this position.

    Full Time

    Salary range : $100,000-$105,000
