Director of Procurement & Insurance Risk Management
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Finance, the Director of Procurement and Insurance Risk Management serves as the University's principal procurement and insurance risk manager. As a solo practitioner in both areas, this role is responsible for both strategic and hands on activities to ensure seamless functioning of the university's supply chain and procurement processes, as well as insurance risk management. The Director develops and executes procurement strategies that drive innovation, align with institutional goals, ensuring cost-effective acquisition of goods and services while upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and compliance. In addition, this role must build strong relationships across Marymount University stakeholders to ensure customer satisfaction. This role demands strategic thinking, strong negotiation skills, in order to optimize procurement strategies and drive cost efficiencies, and effective communication and collaboration skills.
As the lead for the University's insurance risk management program, ensures comprehensive risk mitigation, policy compliance, and insurance coverage. This includes directly managing relationships with external brokers, updating and communicating institutional risk policies, and implementing risk prevention strategies. The Director ensures risk controls are effective and aligned with regulatory standards while providing expert fiscal, budgetary, and operational guidance to senior leadership.
Essential Functions
Procurement
Sole, hands on lead of the University's strategic procurement function, overseeing the acquisition of goods and services with a focus on value creation, supplier optimization, and alignment with institutional priorities.
Drives operational excellence by assessing and reengineering procurement processes, formulating forward-thinking policies, and implementing innovative, data-driven strategies that enhance efficiency, compliance, and cost-effectiveness.
Advises leadership and cross-functional stakeholders with expert guidance on contractual matters involving services, consultants, equipment, construction, and capital projectsensuring legal integrity, risk mitigation, and strategic alignment. Consults with General Counsel, Associate Vice President for Finance, and / or Vice President for Finance & Operations, as needed.
Provides direct oversight of strategic procurement fostering a high-performing, ethical, and inclusive culture through clear communication and continuous improvement initiatives.
Champions cross-departmental collaboration, engaging with academic and administrative units to develop procurement solutions that support institutional goals while maximizing financial stewardship and supplier performance.
Navigates and resolves procurement challenges with agility and authority, ensuring timely and effective solutions that align with policies and maintain stakeholder trust.
Leverages procurement as a strategic lever for institutional success, balancing risk management, operational needs, and long-term value to support the University's mission and sustainability objectives.
Independently oversees the purchase order (PO) process and ensure PO's are issued in accordance with Marymount University's policies and procedures; confirm purchase orders are processed timely, received by suppliers, vendors and fulfilled properly in compliance with contract or other agreements, and closed in a timely manner.
Directly collaborate with accounts payable, and others in financial services in order to ensure seamless processes related to procurement, P-Cards, and payment of vendors.
Develops and communicates workflow, processes, and training aides related to procurement, P-Cards, PO's.
Insurance Risk Management
Manages the University's comprehensive insurance risk management program (excluding employee benefits), ensuring all policy renewals, documentation, and reporting meet broker and carrier requirements and renewal timelines.
Oversees fleet insurance operations in collaboration with Facilities and Transportation, including the implementation of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) checks, driver compliance protocols, and safety training programs.
Primary liaison to external insurance brokers and carriers, managing relationships to ensure optimal coverage, risk mitigation, and cost-effective policy structures.
Reviews major institutional contracts and business proposals to assess risk exposure and ensure alignment with insurance requirements and risk management best practices.
Leads institution-wide training initiatives on risk awareness, prevention strategies, and compliance with University risk policies, fostering a proactive risk management culture.
Oversees risk-related quality assurance activities, including post-incident evaluations, enterprise risk assessments, mitigation planning, business continuity strategy development, and site risk audits.
Participates in key University committees and cross-functional working groups, providing expertise on workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and strategic risk reduction initiatives.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required; focus in Business Administration or Supply Chain Mgmt desired. Master's degree is preferred. Minimum of 7 years of experience in procurement, supply chain, supplier management, and 2 years of insurance risk management operations. Working understanding of contract law, public construction laws, regulations, and contracting methods. Experience with contract review / negotiation; procurement software; competitive solicitation process and related document compilation.

Experience in strategic third-party risk management, assessing, and mitigating enterprise risks.

Microsoft Office 365 includes proficient skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint.
Enterprise Resource System experience / Workday proficiency preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of public and non-profit procurement policies, regulations, and contracting methods to review purchasing requests;
Effective communication skills. Detail oriented. Ability to multi-task. Knowledge of insurance terminology and practices.
