Position Summary

The Director of Culture and Belonging leads efforts to strengthen organizational culture, advance inclusive practices, and collaborate with internal teams to support community-based partners in creating environments where all people can thrive. This role reports to the Vice President of People and Culture and collaborates across divisions to help identify and address organizational needs equipping team members with tools, training, and systems that foster a culture of belonging.

Grounded in our core values of inclusivity, courage, accountability, respect, and excellence , the Director drives culture-building efforts that prioritize respect, collaboration, and employee voice. Externally, and in partnership with U nited Way teams that support our network of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), the Director contributes to efforts that share best practices and foster meaningful conversations around inclusive and accessible practices.

The Director brings a disciplined, data-informed, and mission-driven approach to embedding culture and inclusion as core drivers of organizational effectiveness and social impact.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

Advance Workplace Belonging

  • Promote s a culture of belonging and inclusion by implementing & supporting practices that help all team members feel connected, respected, and valued — such as inclusive meeting norms, storytelling that reflects the diversity of our community and practices that respect and value each individual’s experiences and perspectives.
  • Collaborate with People and Culture team members responsible for onboarding to enhance and support a range of learning styles and communication preferences — including visual, auditory, and hands-on approaches to ensure all team members can engage and succeed.
  • Provide resources , coaching, and guidance to managers to equip them to build cultures of belonging while learning and practicing inclusive leadership.

Learning & Capacity Building

  • Design and deliver ongoing education and learning sessions for all team members to focus on building inclusive workplace practices, respectful communication, and awareness of varied perspectives, customs, and work styles to enhance collaboration.
  • Provide consultation to leaders and teams on sensitive workplace dynamics, cultural responsiveness, and navigating complex conversations .
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts as needed for training (e.g., harassment prevention, intercultural development, respectful workplace practices).
  • Strategy & Accountability

  • Develop and implement an organizational strategy to align culture-building efforts with mission, outcomes, and performance goals.
  • Partner with leadership to proactively address risks and remove barriers to inclusion that affect the team member or partner experience.
  • Define and track key metrics that assess the effectiveness of belonging and inclusion initiatives, drawing on both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Support internal working groups or committees focused on belonging, cultural engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Enhance recruitment and hiring practices to ensure they reflect our organizational values and operational needs, ensuring a consistent , efficient, and welcoming experience for all candidates throughout the hiring process.
  • Community & Sector Engagement

  • Represent U nited Way in relevant learning spaces, networks, and professional groups to remain current on trends, policy shifts, and evolving practices that influence organizational culture and inclusion.
  • In close collaboration with internal stakeholders , support CBOs and sector partners by sharing effective tools and fostering dialogue around inclusive and accessible practices to all community members .
  • Contribute to external messaging and communications that reflect United Ways cultural values and commitment to building thriving, inclusive communities.
  • Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily . The requirements listed are representative of the basic knowledge, skills, and / or abilities required . The individual in this role must display the highest level of integrity and confidentiality. United Way also values innovative thinking, and a successful candidate will be a self-starter who can work within the team to achieve goals and objectives . The individual should have effective communication skills, attention to detail and organization, and flexibility and adaptability . The individual will also maintain knowledge of trends in his / her area of responsibility and reviews literature to understand key issues.

    Qualifications & Education

    We’re looking for a grounded, strategic, and mission-aligned professional who can move from vision to action and thrive in both collaborative and independent work.

  • 5+ years of experience leading similar initiatives in complex organizations (nonprofit experience strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and credibility across varied teams and communities .
  • Experience designing and implementing strategies that create measurable improvements in workplace culture and / or service outcomes.
  • Understanding of systemic barriers and their intersections with organizational performance and community access.
  • Strong facilitation and coaching skills with experience guiding difficult conversations.
  • Familiarity with inclusive workplace practices and policies, with an understanding of how they relate to fairness, respect, and organizational compliance.
  • Ability to use data (qualitative and quantitative) to inform priorities and tell compelling stories of impact.
  • High emotional intelligence, discretion, and confidentiality.
