We are seeking a motivated Human Factors Specialist with expertise in Human AI Teaming to join our dynamic team. As a Human Factors Specialist, you will play a crucial role in designing and optimizing the collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence systems. Your primary focus will be on enhancing the usability, safety, and overall performance of human-AI teams across various domains.
On any given day, you may be called on to :
Conduct research and analysis to understand the human-AI interaction dynamics and identify areas for improvement.Design and develop user-centered interfaces and interaction protocols for effective human-AI collaboration.Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, designers, and data scientists, to integrate human factors principles into AI systems.Conduct usability testing and user studies to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of human-AI teaming solutions.Identify potential risks and challenges associated with human-AI interaction and propose mitigation strategies.Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in human factors, AI technologies, and industry best practices.Provide guidance and support to project teams in implementing human factors principles throughout the development lifecycle.Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and translate them into actionable design recommendations.Contribute to the development of guidelines, standards, and best practices for human-AI teaming.Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position.
Salary Range
$114,000 - $227,500
Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.Qualifications We Require
A Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.The ability to obtain and maintain an SCI clearance, which may may require a polygraph.Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D Systems Research and Analysis candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following :
Graduate degree in a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).The ability to understand, synthesize, and draw insights from multiple types of data streams (e.g., technical, economic, policy) through the use of various analytical tools.Experience working as part of multi-disciplinary teams examining complex systems.Knowledge of the fundamentals of good project management, especially as it pertains to the execution of federally-funded work (e.g., proposal development through annual review, final delivery, and closeout).Experience working with federal sponsors in the defense and intelligence sectors, as well as their domestic FFRDC partners, international partnering agencies, and foreign governments.Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams delivering critical information to customers in a succinct manner.Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience :
Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering, Human Factors, or a related STEM field, plus eight (8) years of relevant experience; OR Masters degree in a related STEM field, plus four (4) years of relevant experience.AI-human teaming publications in peer reviewed journals or conference presentationsDemonstrated ability to tackle abstract problems through the identification and procurement of resources and peopleExperience interacting directly (e.g. in face-to-face meetings) with technology users to solicit feedback and then implement findings to streamline the user interface.Critical thinking, synthesis and problem-solving; ability to deal with ambiguity and adapt to a fast-paced, colleague-centric operation; teaming; self-starting.Three (3) years of experience working in a range of National Security programs, one of which must be Nuclear Deterrence.Proven record in the design and deployment of user-centered interfaces and interaction protocols for effective human-AI collaboration.About Our Team
The Human Factors Department provides technical expertise to the Laboratories though consulting to Sandia projects (both within and external to the Nuclear Weapons program) and to external customers. The Human Factors function supports a broad range of projects related to national security with major objectives of better understanding the role of people in complex systems, enhancing the effectiveness of human-machine systems, and identifying and mitigating the impact of potential human error.

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment / education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
